Well, Comic Con has come and we finally have a full trailer for this Spin-Off. The title may not be the best, but that is a damn good trailer.

Anyone else watching at the moment?

Not much action so far, mostly setting up the main family with hints of "weird shit happening" in the background, after the pre opening credits scene so far the only one with a walker in it.

I get the feeling Nick is going to do well in this world. He reacted pretty well after Calvin became a Walker by hitting him with the car twice, so he seems pretty adaptable in a crisis situation.

Is the writing any better than the original? All of which I know about is in the Cracked "After Hours" segment on apocalypses, which showed the gang singularly unimpressed by it.

So, this pilot was a bit slow, but I appreciated the character development. I was just expecting more of a pay-off, after the long build-up. I'm expecting that the zombies will fully hit the fan by next week.

As an aside, kill walkers with fans.

Doesn't that just spatter all their infected zombie blood about the room?

Not really since everyone is infected already, so when you die, you become a zombie no matter what.

FTWD is at the starting stages of the outbreak, when things are just starting to go pear-shaped. Team Rick didn't find out about it until like a year after the in-universe start of the story.

As for FTWD itself, seeing so few zombies (3 total: 1 at the very start, viral video of one being handled after a highway accident, and Calvin at the end) in a show ostensibly about them was a bit jarring, but understandable given the time setting.

Now that the main protagonists are introduced to the walker threat, I imagine things will be picking up.

And Tam, relying on Cracked for anything other than something to laugh at is an exercise in masochism. tongue

I'm still on the fence about this, but hearing early Walker warnings is a good incentive.

I have the ugly feeling that this show will only last a season or 2, even with Kirkman supporting it. Then again, I don't know what the cast, crew, or overall production is like, or if they've split off from the main show. And portraying the more humanistic side of the outbreak is something that the other show clearly lacked. That's TWD's problem right now, I think. It's so "after the end" there's no interesting character developments anymore, only the sadistic, tin pot mass-murderers have survived - which is what made Alexandria a breath fresh air. A breath, mind you.

TWD can't really do flashbacks anymore, since most of the original cast with any relevant past actions have been killed off, or their loved ones were. FTWD feels like TWD Season 1 getting a second chance, the more personal, emotional stories taking precdence over TWD's fifth and six seasons - which were all about survival and guerilla tactics.

Not saying I want more farm drama, but it'll be nice seeing the cast give a damn about just how horrifying Walkers are again.

Definitely picking up the pace this episode. Amanda (or whatever her name is, the school counselor) has learned the art of the walker kill, or at least been given a lesson in it.

They're moving along a little faster than I was hoping. I would have kept the obvious signs of a zombie invasion to a dead minimum until at least the half-season mark.

We already have The Walking Dead for everything post-zombie-apocalypse, which would give Fear the opportunity to explore the teetering point. The part where the zombie invasion is limited in physical location (just the abandoned church, for example) or seen only by someone in uncertain mental condition, are a lot more interesting to me than overall chaos.

^^ Thanks. Brainfart.

^ In an interview with Kirkman (link somewhere in the main TWD thread), they said the plan was to have FTWD's timeline go faster until it catches up with the main show, then run in parallel with one another (though still separate, no crossovers or anything like that).

Two episodes down.

Fat kid's my favorite character. I really don't want him to die, I hope he becomes the Morgan of this show and comes back a season later.

Hate the mom and the pretentious step-kid with the camera.

The show actually spooked me more with the face masks on those kids than it did with the Walkers - which is a good thing, there's some tense scenes already.

There was a half-serious debate if Tobias murdered Principal Obama before he turned Walker, since he didn't seem to have a bite wound [lol].

I'm loving the acting of the druggie son. Chip off the ol' Stannis block.

The principal's bite wound was on the back of his neck. Presumably he got bit while hunched over listening to the intercoms, like he was in the first episode.

Competent characters have been selected:

  • Shop owner old man.
  • Fat kid.
  • Druggie son.

I fear for their survival.

Is it better than the main show? I stopped liking the Comics a few dozen issues in and the show after Season 1, so would FTWD appeal to me?

I still hold the first season of The Walking Dead in extremely high regard. Just a well-told, well-put-together storyline, that laid a lot of groundwork for the second and third seasons. I don't see the same sort of groundwork for Fear.

'Nother episode. Some people tried to get along. A lot of others didn't. All of them seemed orange.
