The current is alright but just alright...really doesn't fit the trope. I'm honestly not sure that we could adequately pic this without it becoming needlessly complex.
I don't think the current illustrate the trope at all.
A suggestion for a "well-known" runner-up wouldn't work either if it hinges on that recognition, since that's Fan Myopia.
Check out my fanfiction!Well, Just A Face And A Caption wouldn't be a good idea, but what about a collage of magazine covers featuring the runner-up, or a collage showing runner-up vs winner over time? (Clay Aiken, probably. He kept getting coverage for years and years afterward.) That way, you wouldn't have to know who he actually was to understand that he'd gotten far more popular than that year's winner.

The image is just a generic "second place" sort of image. I think a picture of a highly memorable American Idol loser would probably work better, with only a slight caption change - something like "you have no idea who won that year, do you."
