Looks like GOG are rolling out their own Steam-like client for the games they sell.

As far as I'm concerned, this can only be a good thing. Steam needs competition as motivation to stop being such garbage. And if this turns out to be better than Steam, great!

Great, glad to see it is coming along well. And having it being optional so a good move, so some people can keep using the site if they're not interested. I'll give it a shot once it's fully out. The built-in Rollback is pretty neat!

I already use GOG whenever at all possible anyway, so this is interesting news for me.

There's already a thread on the service here. But okay, lets talk about it here anyway.

I've been using it since I got into the closed alpha some months back. Obviously, being in such an alpha (now beta) state, not everything is in here, but what is in here so far is okay for what it is. The program has a "scan for all installed games" function, but it seems to only work with games that use a different installer from the one I used before I installed this one, which means I have to make due with the individual "import folder of game" function to bring it in.

To give you an idea of how well the "scan games" function works: out of the nearly 40 or so games I installed from GOG before installing the client, only 4 or 5 of them were automatically detected by the Galaxy client.

Important distinction IMO is that Go G's client is optional. I may be resigned to having Steam installed on my system by this point but it got its install base by shipping with games that required it (and Origin, Uplay, etc followed suit).

So in a weird twist, I praise them for me not having to use Galaxy for anything...and won't use it. >.> (Will still buy from them of course: I flip flop between them and Steam.)

Personally I love Steam, but dammit if it doesn't need some decent competition. I hope this goes well for Go G.

Hey, more places to scour for special offers is always good.

I wonder if they'll take I-deal. I've never been fond of using credit cards or Pay Pal, so I'd like to pay using debit.

I think that this could be very good indeed, both for GOG and for consumers—as others have noted, the competition, even if initially small, may be a good thing given Valve's domination of the market.

On top of that, if I'm not much mistaken in these, GOG's client has some rather impressive features:

  • It has cross-play with Steam (in "select titles", at least)
  • It allows one to download backup copies of one's games for later offline installation
  • It's entirely optional (which may be quite reassuring to someone who doesn't like clients, such as myself)
  • It includes automatic updating
  • It has a variety of the usual paraphernalia—achievements, chat, etc.
  • It makes pretty much everything besides installing games optional—you can turn off the achievements, social stuff, and so on.

For myself, as mentioned, I'm not a huge fan of clients—I don't think that I'll be using this one. But I'm nevertheless very glad to see it arrive, and very impressed; indeed, I'll confess that I'm actually a little tempted to give it a try. (...I probably won't, however: as I said, I'm not a huge fan of clients.) As a fan of GOG I hope that it helps them to grow further.

How do you make it scan for installed Gog games? coz it ain't doing it.

I was about to be surprised there was a thread for GOG, but then I noticed it hasn't seen action since 2015. That's pretty self-explanatory.

Alright. *Cast Greater Animate Dead*

So, GOG is having their annual Winter Sale right now. Lasting until January 3rd. Accompanying that, they're giving away Full Throttle Remastered for free until roughly noon tomorrow.

Also, GOG Connect currently has another batch of games, and they will be changing it for each week of the sale. They're currently adding the Shadowrun games, amongst a few others. Keep an eye out for the chance of getting those games to your GOG account.
