I, too, know the context of the picture and at a glance I also see a guy with an open jacket coming home, rather than a dude with a ponytail leaving.

I'd be good with a photograph showing a mother and child, with a conspicuously blank patch on the other side, or with the side of the photograph where the father should be ripped off the picture.

None of these quite say 'disappeared dad' while excluding 'dead daddy' which is an issue.

I want to say we should probably get a manga or comic panel of a person going off on his father for not being there while she or he was growing up.

Dead dads qualify for Disappeared Dad.

I personally think it shouldn't, but as written, if a kid's father is dead, then he's a Disappeared Dad.
