Alex Gibney, the director of the documentary.
Now that the film aired on HBO, needless to say, Cruisebhas become a pariah on the Internet due to how the film portrayed him and his actions. I'm seriously wondering if this film will have a poor turnout due to all the stuff Going Clear revealed about the church and Cruise's dealings in it.
Unlikely.
"War without fire is like sausages without mustard." - Jean Juvénal des UrsinsCruise's controversy with Scientology has been an internet meme for at least a decade. Nothing has really changed and if the documentary director made that claim that would be quite the oversized ego.
Well apparently the documentary shed some new light onto what Cruise has been doing in the church (phone tapping Nicole Kidman, living off the downright abusive treatment of the Sea Org members in the church), so many are calling him a near criminal at this point. I imagine the premiere of this movie is going to be awkward if Cruise decides to show up on the red carpet.
Huh. This is the second time a work about Cruise and Scientology precedes an M:I movie.
It bothers the hell out of me how disposable Mission Impossible female leads are.
I don't remember 1 and 2 at all, but I thought 4 actually had a great subversion of this with pretending like Ethan was just divorced in a sort of lame sequel way, then gradually actually subverting it and making it a big plot point.
DumboThe first female lead was revealed as a bad guy and killed. Apparently Cruise wanted Thandie Newton for a cameo in MI:III but the scheduling didn't work out.
As for Cruise and Scientology controversy, it's still nothing new. And I think most documentary filmmakers would like to change the world with what they make but I sincerely doubt it will have any discernible impact on the movie. If the outrage extended beyond those sitting in the theater for the movie, then maybe.
This movie's coming out in a day. Anyone watching?
Early reviews are looking pretty good, but then again they're always like that for movies like this.
Watching it tomorrow with my father. We're both big fans of the series.
So some people are refusing to see film due to the allegations brought against Tom Cruise thanks to Going Clear, and they refuse to support an actor who has ties to an organization that uses slave labor. To them, "vote with your money and morals".
Thoughts?
Well...the movie just had a record opening day, so I'm gonna guess it didn't mean much. Or it meant the wrong things.
Those people are missing out on one of the most fun, and well-crafted action movies you'll see in a theatre this year. So, it's their loss I guess.
Sing the song of sixpence that goes burn the witch, we know where you liveHis association with Scientology - Don't know, don't care.
All I know is that holy shit, the movie was awesome. It is not only the most hilarious but also the most intense and well crafted action movie I've seen this year!
It doesn't have the outlandishness of Furious 7, nor does it have the raw intensity of Mad Max: Fury Road, but the way this movie progresses its complicated plot without ever coming off incomprehensible is just amazing.
Wasn't exactly a big fan of the female main character (Ilsa, I believe). It is just that I watched Fury Road and she is rather underwhelming when compared to the likes of Furiosa. XP
I'm a (socialist) professional writer serializing a WWII alternate history webnovel.... *everyone* is underwhelming by that standard. Seriously, grading people on a curve that includes Charlize Theron's work in fury road is just unfair.
Director of Going Clear, Alex Gibney, is dismayed by all the Cruise hype thanks to this film.

it was a fun film for sure. The logic is a little questionable at times but it's definitely a fun ride the whole way through.
I thought Cruise was leaving the church? Or were those just rumors ?
Now I feel guilty for enjoying this movie

Just got back from watching the movie with my mom and sister (my mom's a fan of Tom Cruise). Yeah, it was a lot of fun.
Simon Pegg makes for great comic relief, no?
EDIT: Also snuck in to see The Man from UNCLE. In IMAX, I should add. Yeah, I don't care what the general consensus is for that one, but I loved it. Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer have great moments and the score sounded like something out of Cowboy Bebop. In fact, if this guy or even this guy talk smack about it, I will be sorely disappointed in them both.

I would have just seen Jurassic World or Pixels, or better yet, not gone to the theater at all, but I got an invitation to go watch it soo...I can say it was enjoyable. Some of plot doesn't make the most sense to me and it had the expected Tom Cruise ticks(his chest looks less impressive in each subsequent film) but I love how it came full circle. It's not the kind of story I'd write, but it's how I try to tell mine, if that makes any sense.
I still think the best Tom Cruise movie that I've seen was "Edge of Tomorrow". None of the M:I films I've seen were on a par with that one.
I just saw this movie tonight. It was very cool. :) I feel kind of bad for Sequence Breaking, though. ^_^;;
I like to keep my audience riveted.Just saw this tonight with my parents as well. Very nice film with some very nice action. My dad seriously loved it.
Opening scene was the best.
Which director has reprimanded Cruise for not responding?
