Recently I had the idea to start a thread dedicated to the creation of a vision document for a video game. A kind of collective project where a bunch of tropers get together and spitball ideas for a game they'd like to see, and then try to shop them into a single coherent document.

For those of us with a more-than-passing interest in game development, I thought this might be an interesting idea to try, as well as being a chance to practice collaborative writing and outlining. It also has the potential to offer practice in the area of organizing one's ideas, which is something I have a great deal of trouble with personally and serves as my primary impediment to productive writing.

My rationale for putting this in Writer's Block as opposed to Video Games is that it concerns the creation of a piece of writing. I hope it isn't inappropriate.

A handy template I came across while looking into this subject on my own can be found here. It was written by Chris Taylor and should give folks some idea of where to start, though whether this is going to be carried through a google doc or what have you, I'm not yet certain.

So, what do people think?

I'm definitely interested in this. Aside from some carelessly started projects, I put a lot of thought into the game that is more or less the setting for my story. But I never really worked with others on it, so just getting some design discussion on would surely be a lot of help for my writing.

Now, I can see some problems coming up if knowledge of a particular field is missing in the team. From what little experience I have, this leads to someone getting into the field and kinda working on his own since the rest of the team just can't contribute; in the end that particular part of the document is just kinda there. But I guess that happens with any bigger project.

I can't necessarily see the vision document being of much use in the end, but the process creating it would be very interesting, at least to me.

I've been wanting to start a collaborative writing project with fellow tropers for a while, now. Definitely interested.

I'm glad to see that there's some interest in this at least, though as of now I'm not sure just how this should be carried through. Should the work take place in this thread, on it's own Tropes page or on an entirely separate Google doc?

I don't think creating a trope page for a nonexistent work is recommended.

Trope pages for ongoing projects do exist though. I'm not quite certain if this would fit, and would like clarification on that, but I don't think it's out of the question.

[up] I think what nrjxll meant was that this is for a nonexistant work, as in, a video game that does not exist. On going works are like TV shows and comic books, because they exist.

I'd say get a google doc and work on it there. (I guess this means I'm interested in trying this out)

Yeah, as I understand it this is an exercise in planning and organizing ideas, not something that's meant to result in an actual work. Which is why I'm not sure a trope page would be appropriate.

Alright, that's understandable. Google doc it is.
