I would love to know the hardness of the science as well. I generelly write softer science though.
Saint LaughterThe ships use Fusion reactors if available but still use Fission if needed.
And I'd have to say Physics Plus. The setting is generally hard science but not so hard we have to avoid everything.
Any brain-in-a-jar kind of stuff? What about mind uploading?
Saint LaughterI thought that was clear by full body conversion cyborgs?
Oh right. I'm dumb like that sometimes.
Saint LaughterSo what decides a character's Max HP? Equipment? Medicine or Engineering depending if mostly organic or mostly mechanical? Race?
Click Click Boom BoomNah nothing determines it it's all set for you from the start.
So, update, we'll be starting when Saturday comes about. And I'm in a good mood so ask some more questions and I will try to answer them without giving away any major spoilers.
How big are the star ships in this setting?
Click Click Boom BoomSmall Ships are akin to carrier helicopters and fighter jets. Exploration Ships like the Esperanza are as big as a small school. Best described as 16 rooms, 4 of which were for support systems. Carrier ships would best be described as 2 large warehouses stuck together.
But since the cast missed the chance to get to Haven by a few decades, technology has advanced so there are newer and bigger ships. Nothing to the level of Star Destroyers but closer to the Enterprise. You may get to use them once you get the blueprints.
The Professor shall be annoyed about missing several decades of technological progression.
What sort of equipment do we have on our ship? I'm assuming since its an exploratory model, we got some pretty decent sensors and stuff. Possibly some nice hazardous environmental suits. (Though I suppose if we're more space explore then planet explore we probably just have EVA suits.)
Click Click Boom BoomThe standard Space Suit all human explorers wear is technically speaking a hazard suit. Since you know Cosmic radiation and all that.
As for equipment, that was in the Cargo bay, in the front of the ship, which was crunched by the asteroid you crashed into, so what you have in your pods is all you get. Thankfully that includes Salvage tools.
Well, planets have a different set of hazards then space does. Not saying cosmic radiation isn't an issue, but having something set up to deal with that, doesn't mean the suit could deal with say corrosive atmospheres or extreme pressures.
Though since we I think are more focused on looking for coloniziable worlds, that any environment like that we probably wouldn't bother exploring in the first place. Unless maybe we have a side mission to also see if there's any other life out there amongst the stars?
Click Click Boom BoomExploration of other planets isn't on the agenda. You were actually supposed to explore Haven, but... that kind of fell out. The mission to get there still stands but as for the in game story that's going to be hard.
Details on that later. I mean you can try explore any planets I might generate later.
Could we possibly build mining equipment and gather valuable resources from these maybe planets?
Saint LaughterYes you can, mining ships were listed in ship possibilities, and Build Material can be salvaged from ships or dug up from Asteroids or planets. To save time on unneeded posts I will just assume that if you decide to build a space station a refinery and 3D printer will be included.
Well I was hoping to eventually build up to a Deathstar or something and I'm sure the Professor is willing to do any necessary resaerch?
Saint LaughterIf by Deathstar, you mean self sustaining mobile space colony readily equipped for heavy duty mining. Then yes. What better way to get at the valuable minerals in a planet's core then exploding it into easily processed chunks.
Click Click Boom BoomMy thoughts exactly.
Saint LaughterGuys seriously? You plan on going the Dead Space route. The stations you could feasibly build are more like the colonies from Mobile Suit Gundam or the ones in Space Engineers.
The Build Material for a Death Star would also be incredible.
I'll settle for an Eclipse Class Super Star Destroyer then.

Click Click Boom BoomEnh once you get the blueprints. Now. Would you like a list of ship types you could feasibly build?
Ships include other vehicles.
Sure.
Also, do we have to obtain blueprints or could we feasibly develop our own blueprints? Like say after we upgrade to a ship with an actual science/engineering lab?
Click Click Boom BoomAnd can robots sacrifice limbs for bulding material?
Saint Laughter
Oh, what sort of reactors are we using? Fission? Fusion? Anti-matter? -insert Phlebotinum of choice-?
And where do you intend this to be on the Mohs Scaleof Science Fiction Hardness? The lack of FTL makes me think its going to be on the harder side of things, but I'd like to know for sure.
