So, if there is a mention in the media, it's Recursive Canon. If the idea that the show is a show in its own universe is fan-produced, it's Literary Agent Hypothesis. And here we have it in Word of God but not in the media - so which of the tropes is it?
For the Macross franchise, Word of God says that all the anime works are TV shows or movies within the universe; whether any particular work is animated or live action in universe seems unclear.
