What trope is this (or is it one)?

I don't know if this is a trope or not, but I seem to remember from some movie/TV show/etc. this theme or idea that some character saved someone/everyone else, but in doing so, he/she was tainted with something from the evil thing, or something like that, and because of this, that character went evil or suffered some horrible fate that he/she could have avoided had he/she not saved the other character/s. The character possibly becomes bitter over this, but I don't quite remember the conditions in the story I saw it in... Is this a trope? Or can anyone think of an example in fiction where this happened?

Might want to ask in the Trope Finder about this one.
