This trope is supposed to be the opposite of continuity nod - when there's some subtle acknowledgement that some previous event in the story DIDN'T actually happen or isn't canon. This is explained clearly and concisely, and is definitely a usable trope. However, a large number of the examples seem to be examples of Take That, Scrappy! directed towards events or plotlines rather than specific elements or characters, examples of just plain Take That, Scrappy!, or, worse, examples of just plain mentioning things that have happened with no indication that the creator doesn't like it, let alone doesn't consider it canon, or at least no explanation in the example to that effect. I can't say why people are misusing it so much even just on the trope page, but something should be done to stop it.
