There are ways around that. Like arranging regular supply drops if he can find a stable entrance and exit, or just alternating time between the underworld and the surface world. Is he actually planning that far ahead? I haven't a clue, but humans can clearly handle the conditions there, its just the lack of food and water that are the problem.
