I'm re-thinking on my brief time playing The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and noting that I stopped playing and sold the game after so much grief with the game's motion-based controls, it was around the time I had to go back to the first dungeon.

Can someone remind me WHY I had to do that?

Padding.

...Oh, you mean the in-universe answer? To collect water from the Skyview Spring to bring to heal Faron, the Water Dragon (not to be confused with Twilight Princess's Faron, the Light Spirit)

Even with the Anti-Frustration Features, I still haven't bothered to get the Switch remake.

I'm willing to bet that the infamous bug, one so strong that Nintendo had to create a channel specifically for fixing it, may be what convinced them to make the next console have the ability to create patches for games rather than the system performance itself.

And yes, I was asking for the in-universe reason, not the technical reason, thank you.

I think the Wii U was already going to have the ability to update and patch games anyway, since it's the only way a video game can support having DLC (plus, they had already released the 3DS which could update and patch games as well).

So here is a question, would you say that Nintendos Blue Ocean strategy has actually given them the edge in the videogame industry?

While the Wii attracted people who quickly lost interest in it, the Switch was once said by Nintendo (I don't have the source) to have a 50/50 male/female userbase. And it's the best selling console out of all its contemporaries.

My niece plays it a lot. My sister-in-law plays it a lot. My nephew used to, before moving to Steam and Roblox. My older brother, a lapsed gamer, now plays some games on it - specifically the two open world Zelda games. And I have more games for the Switch than any two previous consoles of mine combined.

The Switch might have indeed been successful in its attempts to bring in the casual and hardcore crowd (however those terms are defined) together.

Is this part of Nintendo's Blue Ocean strategy? Or is that strategy specifically something they only did for the Wii and the DS (which supposedly had a large female userbase)?

[up]While other gaming corps seem to aim only for the core gamer demographic, Nintendo casts a much wider net, attempting to catch casual gamers and non-gamers in addition to the core. They also never forgot children as a priority audience.

Even aside from the success of specific titles like Wii Sports, Brain Training and Animal Crossing, I'd say it's working out for them. Nintendo is still a way for many new gamers to enter the hobby, and that fosters a certain degree of brand loyalty, in part because of the strength of their IP.

I think Nintendo games (first party titles at least) mostly have a nack for threading the needle between casual and hardcore.

Take almost any mainline Mario game, for example. The games are crafted so that inexperienced gamers can go through and just beat the game pretty well. But the extra objectives and secret levels are there for a hardcore gamers, and they DO get hard.

And more to the point, there's so many games out there, there's always options to satisfy different types of gamers. Honestly in a lot of cases the "divide" between casual and hardcore feels forced.

Games also have to have accessibility so the new generation of players can and would want to play them. It's always a balance to appeal to experienced players and inviting new people into it. People complained how Tot K's tutorial was copy paste from Bot W, stating how it pointless as they already did it. But how about the people who didn't start with Bot W? Or the new players who entered the market between Bot W and Tot K? Six years is a big gap in gaming.

I've seen that with a couple titles Nintendo has just blocked people from going online but hasn't kicked people who are on off, so now it's a Halo 2 shutdown situation where a few remaining Nintendo fans are trying to stay online as long as possible trying to hold off the inevitable.

I dunno if you guys have seen the Twitter civil war (well, for a certain value of "civil") over whether the Wii U was a good console or not.

Personally, I loved my Wii U. It had free online, the Virtual Console (actually own the games you buy, what a concept!), Miiverse, full backwards compatibility and a super sweet lineup of first-party bangers. Here's a hill I'll die on: Super Mario 3D World was better than Odyssey. And I mean a lot better.

The Wii U also had Tropical Freeze, which became my favorite Nintendo game since Mario Galaxy, and still is.

I'm not gonna say the Wii U was better than the Switch, but people love to Accentuate the Negative and pretend the Wii U sucked simply because it wasn't successful.

Is that a Wocket in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

The big screen that is also a controller gimmick was not a very good design aside from very niche applications. Most developers would rightfully ignore it except in the most token of manners.

It had its share of good games, of course, but the console itself was merely incidental to that. Add in the confusing marketing, and the Wii U just couldn't hack it and needed to be replaced.

The Wii U was heavily flawed both in terms of hardware and software, but I enjoyed the 4 games I got for it.

As of April 9th, all Nintendo of Europe website domains will be standardized to nintendo.com/{insert country domain here} like NCL did.

@Thrice Charming the wii u was by all accounts a failure of a console as with only a scant few games that are good and those games are normally ported to the switch and with everything else being forgotten over time as most of its library was subpar at best so those that are in Twitter are just being contrarian to how others feel about the console.

Also no 3d world is not better then Odyssey, you really need to stop the idea that your preference are the best for the series.

I genuinely do like the Wii U, but yeah it's also hard to deny its litany of issues are well-documented and far outweigh the positives.

    In list form...
The positives:
  • Undeniably fun presentation
  • Pretty good first-party library!
  • I'm putting an asterisk here to elaborate on down below, but I think Miiverse was pretty novel. A family-friendly message board that's integrated directly into the games in a variety of fun ways is a very Nintendo idea, and (especially earlier on) I feel like it gave the console a sort of cozy feel to it. WaraWara Plaza in particular is worth praising: it always reminded you when booting the console up that the experiences playing these games was a shared one.
  • This idea would be iterated on more with the Switch, but being able to play off the TV (to a certain distance) is nice.
  • The controller is a TV remote! More consoles need this, it's convenient!!
  • Free online. Like.... yeah?

The negatives:

  • The GamePad is a literal weak point for the console. It's unsurprisingly fragile, yet it's necessary to even access the console and for its entire lifespan was unavailable in stores if you ever needed a replacement.
  • The GamePad is a metaphorical weak point for the console. As mentioned a few posts above, it was usually just extra junk for devs to wrangle with; the damn thing was probably one of the biggest factors for the lack of third-party support. It's telling that even a majority of first-party games were able to be ported to the Switch and be no worse for wear removing any GamePad integration, if there was any to start with.
  • Oh, also, third-party support. The console itself being underpowered, plus the GamePad, basically meant no support past Nintendo themselves after the first few years. This is probably the thing the console is most remembered for.
  • Going back to Miiverse, my asterisk from before is that "family-friendly message board" is very difficult to enforce and the site was a chaotic clusterfuck. Especially once the 3DS also had Miiverse added to it and a browser client became available, which drastically increased its userbase and made it that much harder to really moderate. I have enough good memories of and because of Miiverse that I can't be too harsh, but... if anything I'm surprised it didn't get shuttered sooner.
  • I can see both sides of the Virtual Console argument here, but honestly given ownership didn't carry between the Wii or 3DS I'm erring towards this being a negative. I don't disagree with NSO being relatively cheap in terms of justifying its own value, but as far as the retro library goes I do think it's a better value than if the games were all five a pop again. It's just being attached to accessing the Switch's online features that's the problem.

The consensus I've always seen is "bad console with a good library" and I think that's fairly accurate. The console still had strong points, mostly in terms of presentation, but its issues were apparent early on and only caused more damage the later into its lifespan Nintendo got.

I still like the Wii U (at the very least I have it to thank for meeting my girlfriend of four years now), but I can't really go to bat for it being really good, actually when its was the architect of its own commercial failure.

Please calm down, people. -_-

Like I said, the Wii U had lots of great games. What I disliked was its godawful OS, how easy it was to brick (mine died that way), and the fact it still stuck to regional coding like all previous home console Nintendo systems (the reason why it affected me more in this case than with the other systems was due to not being able to buy DLC from the eShop; plus, I wouldn't have been able to play PAL versions of games like I can in my Switch).
