Retro-thread. Because there isn't a thread for this game, and I'm about to play the DLC's at last.

I read that "Fallout 3 is easily broken early-game" and thought that was absolute bull, because while I could handle myself in a fight, my LW isn't unstoppable. Then I remembered, way back when I'd first started, I set the difficulty up to Very Hard to take advantage of the XP boost (and because I'd beaten the game on Normal, and felt it'd be boring to do it again)

Turned it back to Normal, walked into Old Olney with my old character, and murdered everything that wasn't Charon or Sydney. Sweet, sweet revenge for the last 3 games where they murdered Sydney and Charon.

Fallout 3 isn't very retro at all if you ask me.

But it's still a great game, what DLC are you going for? Because Operation Anchorage will make you overpowered from the start as soon as you take your share of the loot.

It's been a while since I played, completed and loved the process of Fallout 3. Most of what I have to say about the game got covered in the New Vegas thread.

[up][up]

I figured I'd just go in the order they were released, but Broken Steel seems to continue the story directly, whereas the others take place... at some random point in time.

I've heard good things about The Pitt, and Point Lookout supposedly has some deal of Nightmare Fuel.

Well honestly; I'd recommend soldiering (lel) on through Operation Anchorage, once you're done with the DLC you'll earn the Power Armor training for the Winterized Power Armor inside. Along with that, you probably already know about the Stealth Suit and Gauss Rifle.

Point Lookout?

Bring guns. Lots of guns. And explosive chucking weaponry as well. Those hicks with no body armor are harder to kill than any Deathclaw in the rest of the game, or at least it seems like it.

Point Lookout and The Pitt are fun. Operation Anchorage and Mothership Zeta are dumb and should be avoided at all costs.

Mothership Zeta [is] dumb

Yes, I've heard about this.

Aliens.

[down] I don't really mind it. I know it was heavily criticized for being an implausible addition.

Dumb? Yeah, aliens and virtual reality in the aftermath of an apocalypse kind of is. But beneficial? Beyond words to describe the power the endings/playthroughs will earn you.

I suppose it would explain that Alien Blaster you find in the main game.

For a new playthrough, they're pretty handy. Right until the point when you get to Broken Steel and start finding Tesla Cannons and Heavy Incinerators lying around. (The incinerators, by the way, will always hit their target in VA Ts so as long as they're in the open. The more you know, right?)

Oh, and the Alien Blaster was a continuing Easter Egg in the Fallout series if I remember right. A joke weapon in the series if you could call it that.

But not Fallout 3's aliens.

I like Mothership Zeta and Operation Anchorage as much as I like the other two, which is to say I like them a lot. I paid money for them twice, after all, so I must have done so.

Damn you Playstation. Download faster.

I was trying to figure out a better way to start out of Vault 101. With my previous character I sort of went "sneak/lockpick/science, fudge all else", and ended up with Power Armor. Then I figured, play in-character. LW has a Daddy's Boy perk, got a BB gun, and has a Little Leaguer perk. On another character, Heisenberg, I wanted to be Walter White, so I went all 'Science/Medicine/Speech/Barter", which didn't last too long since Fallout 3 is so combat-intensive.

Each of these experiences felt very disjointed.

Now I'm on my fifth character. Black. Male. Figured I wouldn't have him be puppy-kicking evil like I made "Heisenberg" and blow up Megaton, but I decided he'd be as realistic as possible. Not picking up too much ammo, dropping unnecessary items and clothes, gave his BB gun to Butch, avoids grinding XP with radroaches, steals Vault-security police batons, etc.

Zeta stinks anyway. Really disliked all the characters in that, especially the obnoxious little girl. The ship locking up at the end was awful too. And the alien glue made the repair skill nearly pointless. It had a bit of spectacle, but I'd rate all other add-ons above it, even Anchorage.

But heck, I'd be happy if just Point Lookout and Broken Steel worked.

I just got the Game of the Year Edition and started trying to mod it. Body replacers don't seem to be working, and I followed all the instructions. Gotta do some research...

You too? I tried one of those but all I ever got when I took peoples' armor was the same generic undergarments. Which just means that for me FO 3 actually is just a combat RPG, unlike all the other Bethesda games in my collection.

I figured it out. I had installed the "Archive Invalidation - Invalidated!" mod, but it didn't auto-launch the installer through NMM. Rather, I had to go to the game's Data folder and run it myself. Custom meshes and textures are working!

I have a couple of game questions. Remember that I've only just started playing.

  • In Vault 101, is there a peaceful way to get past the Overseer? Amata got really mad at me for killing him, but I couldn't see any dialog options that offered an alternative.
  • In Megaton, what Explosives skill do you need to safely disarm the bomb (as opposed to merely having a chance to blow the place up)?

So, if you have the skill, you can disarm it, no problem? Interesting. I imagined there was a chance you'd fail and turn the place into ... another crater.

Crouch and you can pickpocket what you need right off the Overseer. The guy's just a bitch, he doesn't attack you he stands there watching as you kill his guard and then take his stuff off him.
