I've been combing over some various forms of media that are distributed over the internet and I think there is some need of better organization or at least clearer distinctions, as there are so many types of Web Original that it just isn't clear what particular media goes where. I am talking mostly regarding web original namespaces and how they relate to the traditional namespaces. It's easy enough if the content is completely original, but anything based on existing franchises starts to approach a gray area. This is especially confusing when it comes to franchises that have specific aspects being distributed in non-traditional ways.

My focus is on more elaborate video content based on established franchises, most anything written can fit under normal Fan Fic. It's when you get to a feature length production, multiple episodes and even seasons that the line gets blurred between Fan Fic, Web Video, Web Original and traditional genres like Live-Action TV, Film and even Western Animation, all depending on the format that is used.

For example:

  • Officially released material, distributed through internet-based format. Does a feature-length story go under Film or Web Video? If broken up into parts, is it a Series?
  • Fan Works, this runs the spectrum of being based solely within one aspect of the franchise to fans creating their own, unique adaptation. Is it Fan Fic, Web Video, Web Original, Web Comics?

I'm not sure there is an exact answer here, but with so much more stuff being released through internet "channels" it might be useful to discuss this.
