Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe this has it's own Trope yet. But I believe it happened in both the 90's Flash and CW's Arrow. I'm sure it has happened elsewhere as well. But y'know the writers decide to get rid of the canon ship because the other ship is more popular.
