I enjoyed the first Minions well enough, but the whole franchise has started to feel a bit tired to me. I haven't even seen the most recent Despicable Me.

Man what A huge delay.

I'm a fan, so that's pretty disappointing.

Also kind of generally worrying because IIRC that was the first movie to be pushed back due the pandemic. So, the further delay seems like a very pessimistic prediction about the pace of vaccinations.

I do wonder why they don't just release the movie on streaming? Illumination and Universal are with the movie right? They could release the movie on Peacock.

[up] I would have to assume it's because Peacock probably doesn't have enough subscribers to warrant dropping the movie right there and then.

Then again, they could do what WB is doing and have the movie in both theaters and on Peacock for a finite number of days and make it a selling point for the streaming service or what Disney is doing and have it be available on Peacock for an extra fee, but maybe both ideas are still on the ambitious side?

For better or worse, the first Minions movie generated a whopping $1.159 billion. Can the second one match or even surpass that accomplishment via streaming? I wouldn't think so...

I wonder that too. I know there is less revenue generated from streaming than from movies in a theater (I wonder how this particularly stacks up for kids' movies), but they must be aware of the risk of the movie not doing well with such a long delay.

I am thinking of the Wonder Woman sequel as a sort of comparator, because it is a blockbuster movie that ended up streaming, but I wonder how much the fact that it is kind of a mess (and might have bombed in theaters) has to do with that.

Just spitballing here, but I wonder how much the calculation has to do with other, related merchandise (i.e. in restaurants and theme parks), and how that would do better post-pandemic.

I think the thinking here is that Universal can repeat 2015 and have two massive summer blockbusters not far from each other, which might be why Universal is making this move.

OTOH, it means the Super Mario movie is definitely not coming out next year. Oh well.
