This trope is supposed to be about a holder of an individual identity being a hero when all previous incarnations were villains (and is thus described as a comic book trope). Yet several wicks, and examples on the trope page, use it as a new incarnation of a group or generalized individual, such as new leadership of an organization, taking a different tack than the previous. This is, obviously, a completely different thing,

I don't see why we can't expand the current definition; I like taking tropes out of a genre specific state, especially with a loose name like this. Thoughts?

Fixed the tag.

If it's supposed to be a new take on the same character, it's basically a Heel–Face Turn adaptation. It sounds familiar, though.

If it would also include a new character taking the same name, it would also apply to other positions and groups as well. It'd still be restricted to specific positions, though. I'm not sure that's anything other than, "sometimes, characters in the same organisation don't always have the same alignment," which doesn't feel particularly tropeworthy.

I'd say that the definition should be expanded to match the usage. Tropes Are Flexible and I don't see any reason why we should restrict this to individuals instead of groups or organizations.

Replacements within the same continuity, or the same group in adaptations?

Both, I think, but probably as separate tropes. Both are tropeworthy, but "creator retools villainous character/group as heroic in adaptation" is definitely different than "character attempts to redeem a Legacy Character or organization by taking up its mantle and pulling a Heel–Face Turn with it".

Which is different from "organization that did unsavory things gets new leadership that is much saner." I see all three in wicks and examples.

Reading the thing it sounds like 'X guy was interesting but to make him a good guy we are going to need an Expy as we just wrote the old guy as too evil'

Which is something that happened on Star Trek Voyager with Tom Paris and every dvd commentary loves to tell the story.
