Maybe I'm misreading things, but that Divine Hero Punch was so powerful, all gods left Earth. After all, looks like Yuna and pals won't be Heroes anymore.

Anywho, congrats on achieving this brave new world, guys! As a bonus, the Taisha won't be a nuisance anymore, since most became grain. ...Also, the Taisha said that the Shinkon would unite all humans, but it seems like the organization was only talking about itself.

I think it was more like the Shinju gave all of its power to Yuna to make her Ultra Mankai Yuna who punched everything into daijoubu, and the Shinju itself went Mankai to restore the outside world and then died as it Sanged.

Also I read some interpretations on /a/ that Gyuuki was Yuna Takashima all along, which I didn't really get from the series as a whole but makes insane amounts of sense when I think about it. The NoWaYus showing up to help the barrier, even based Chikage was a great moment too

I'll agree that the ending was obviously rushed, maybe due to Kadokawa not having much faith in it and giving it a full cour (which is ridiculous considering how well the WaSuYu movies did which apparently alone made the entire S2 profitable). Even so, I still liked it and it actually made more sense than Season 1's ending. I'll also forever be in the camp that a completely happy ending is the only one that would've worked for this show given its themes.

Itsuki being made new club president over Karin is complete BS though. I call nepotism. NEPOTISM!

It was a bit rushed, but it was still fine.

Season 1's ending felt like a huge copout with everyone getting healed, but it wasn't bad.

Also, Gin's power giving Ultra Mankai Yuna the final boost she needed in order to punch Amaterasu in the face was amazing.

I'm not sure what the significance of the blue crow was - presumably something from the prequel - but I'm pretty happy with this ending.

Yeesh, the scene with the little hands of light picking Yuuna's spirit apart was creepy. The narration of her diary in an earlier episode was well-done too, yuuna came across as someone who is essentially terminally ill, with all the depression/rationalizing/desperation that comes with that.

Incoming rambling: Just got finished watching this. Overall rating: 6/10.

First 10 episodes were such a snoozefest. Felt like a 12 episode show with bad pacing. I just could not bring myself to care about these characters. They weren't unlikable, just not very interesting. That episode about Itsuki being shy about singing.. I get it's setup for her "dream" but they spent too much time on it. And I did not need to have another flashback as late as episode 10 to hammer in what a good friend Touga is, that's what the first 9 episodes were establishing; this was common with the show, constantly re-treading stuff to hammer in things that we already know. I get that people enjoy these slice of life scenes but they bored me.

It got a bit more interesting in the 10+ episodes, but Touga's plan didn't really make much sense to me. She doesn't like what heroes have to go through, so her plan is to break the barrier thus... killing everyone. Seemed a bit nuts. Plus her whole suicidal arc was really sudden and glossed over (which I think being a pg13 show factors into). Compounded by the overly rosy-happy-friendship-prevails ending which I was dreading the whole way through. It felt especially forced because explanation for why suddenly everyone is magically feeling better. Again with Touga; her friend is a soulless vegetable because of her; I feel like in a more serious show this would be pushing her into suicidal tendences again but that would ruin the happy ending.

I didn't hate these characters (except Itsuki), they were just dull. Itsuki, I thought she was annoying and preferred it when she lost her voice. Karen, her early tsundere act is annoying but she gets better, she's my favorite character. Fuu is the archtypical big sister type, I liked her just because she felt like more of a serious character. Yuuna is the airheaded always positive blabbermouth archtype who is especially annoying to me. Touga, didn't care about her plight really, as I said earlier her suicidal tendencies are glossed over and she just comes across as a bit of a sourgrapes/drunken bore archtype.

The show this reminds me of most is Princess Principle. But I enjoyed that a lot more; cute girls are a lot more interesting to watch when they are secretly spies and part of a compelling story, as opposed to faffing around in a club room getting worried about singing class. I liked Karin though and would not mind if she joined in as part of the cast in Princess Principle.

My favorite scene was when Karin becomes blind and deaf, even though it then turns out to be of zero consequence. Had a chilling and sad tone to it that I wish the show delved more into. I also liked the scene where Fuu goes batshit upon hearing Izuki's audition and tries to murder Karin with her gigantic sword. It was the only scene where I genuinely laughed even though it wasn't supposed to be funny.

My verdict is 6/10. Don't go in expecting Madoka Magica, go in expecting K On with a bit of dark action towards the end - but not too dark. Slow pace, unoriginal characters. I won't be watching the sequel, maybe will watch the prequel if it actually has an unhappy ending given it involves a character who is completely crippled by the time of this series. You should watch Princess Principle instead if you haven't.

Not that this is a review or anything. I'm just a bit upset that I sat through this hoping it would grow on me and felt like ranting about it and discussing why I didn't like it. I was recommended it after asking for a show that is dark, bloody and violent.

Of the post-Madoka dark magical girls, this is definitely one of the lighter ones. Lots and lots of slice of life to make you like the characters before the massive tone swings and depressing moments hit. The prequel I'll say is better in that it sticks the landing better I think. If you want dark and violent magical girls though, there are much better candidates.

Nah, nowhere near. It almost gets really dark near the climax, but then the ending overrides all of that. And the second season doesn't go all that dark either.

It's dark in different ways than Madoka, although it's also offset by a lot of Slice of Life. Also, I think that the second season (assuming we're just talking about Hero Chapter) is darker in some ways than the first, although it's all concentrated on Yuna. It's probably influenced by me experiencing a close family member die of cancer around the same time, but that season seemed devoted to shitting on Yuna as much as possible.

I feel that what stops Hero Chapter from being as dark as the first season is that, as you said, it's mostly focused on just Yuna, and we only really get to see what's happening toawrds the final episodes. Until then it's just a few glimpses here and there. The first season goes a bit further in showing how bad things are going.

Also in response to the review above, I believe that all of the Slice of Life in the first half of the show is absolutely necessary for the show to work, because it sets up what the girls are fighting for and what they're ultimately set to give up if they keep on fighting. They're just a bunch of dorky middle-school girls first, and magical girls second, and the first half of the series is supposed to get you to really care about these girls. And the Hero Club genuinely feel like good friends: they exchange banter, they have inside jokes and stories, they even do that thing that girls do where they all crowd their phones around the same outlet.

I also believe that Itsuki is the most underrated character in the show. She starts off seeming weak-hearted and timid, but interacting with the Hero Club allows her to gain a significant amount of drive and self-confidence in the frame of her singing dream. When she loses her voice we learn through her notepad that she's actually Little Miss Snarker which you wouldn't really expect from a sweetheart like herself. And despite her dream having been to sing, we never see her break down about her unfortunate fate, despite it later being shown that the issue actually troubled her a lot more than she let on. By the end of the first season she's genuinely strong, somebody who can stand alongside her older sister like she always wanted to. This Character Development also carries over into the second season.

The best girl, however, is the perfect adorable cinnamon roll that is Sonoko Nogi.

But I do have to give Karin and her Awesome Fight the second place here. That girls is freaking amazing.

Washio Sumi did wonders, but it was in Hero Chapter that Sonoko truly became my favorite... by means of her introduction to the club. She's just an amazing, weird legendary predecessor. No two ways about it.

I do agree that they're all great, however.

Was Washio Sumi Chapter released English subbed? Last time I checked, Crunchyroll didn't have it. It's odd for them to have the first season but not the rest.

It was subbed by Amazon along with Hero Chapter, but the subbing team clearly did not have any sort of style guide and the subs are very low quality.
