Depends on execution, it is extremely prevalent but I think there are some things you could still do with them. Don't use them as a twist though, that'll make my and probably many consumers eyes roll into our heads at mach2.

Anything can be written to be interesting and anything can work for a story; it just matters how it's executed.

Yeah, a protip: don't think too hard about what tropes you're using while you're writing/planning out your story. That kind of dissective exercise should be happening after the fact, not before it.
