I mean, it's not the only film from the 80's with badly aged greenscreen. There's far too many to count with bad greenscreen effects in them.

Bad green screen is still a thing even today, I remember several scenes in the Green Lantern movie that were as bad as the 80s ghostbusters.

Even good Stop Motion in live action films hasn't aged well when put next to even mediocre CG. Jurassic Park made sure of that.

Yeah, stop motion is a thing where it needs to either be on its own (Paranorman, the Corpse Bride, etc.) or part of a crazy mixed media thing. Gravity Falls did that. Because, no matter how good it is, stop motion always sticks out because it was pretty much always below 24 frames per second.

Not Three Laws compliant.

[up] It all depends on how it's done. All the AT-A Ts in the battle of Hoth in Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back for example were stop motion and they still hold up.

They spent months animating it frame by frame though and had the budget to spend on it.

Randall William Cook, who animated Vinz Clortho, would later supervise the animation in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and second unit direct King Kong.

It helps immensely that mechanical items tend to work better as stop motion than organic creatures. Star Wars also utilized several large scale models for the actors to interact with, rather than entirely using frame compositing. That said, the terror dogs in Ghostbusters may be dated but their design and the way they move was still expertly utilized.

I saw the movie earlier.

I kinda liked it, but it's not great. It's good. Not much else to say.

Well maybe one thing: Holtzmann was awesome and I wanna see more of her in the sequel.

Holtzman was seriously the most entertaining character in the bunch and they need to market the hell out of her going forward. Everybody loves Holtzman. Even people who hated the movie love Holtzman.

The villain was kinda weak though. His motive is to destroy the world because "I was bullied!" or something? I dunno, it just felt stupid, but I did like the idea of him dying and becoming a ghost to continue his scheme.

[up] The villain was accused of being an MRA strawman. Because all the arguments needed more fuel.

He seemed more like they were going for some kind of sociopath who wants an excuse to make the world burn. For whatever reason, he reminded me a bit of Mark David Chapman, the nutcase who killed John Lennon for whatever reason.

Yeah, his motives were kinda weak. MRA strawman is a pretty weak accusation, though. Aat no point do his motives have anything to do with advancing men or tearing down women. He is casually misogynistic, but that's not his motive. He's just a sociopath using extreme measures to feel powerful.

I think a better comparison would be a school shooter. He's kinda like Kylo Ren in the sense that his particular flavor of unhinged is pathetic and yet extremely dangerous.

And - in a rare example of these words coming together in a form that isn't meant as an insult - he becomes a much better character after he dies.

After he dies he gets exactly what he wants without realizing it. Honestly, he would have been a better villain if he'd cut down on the whole "end of the world as we know it" thing and just made his active goal to forcibly become one of the people he envied growing up. The ghosts coming to the fore could totally have been an unintended consequence of the tech he had to use to become a ghost with possessive powers to begin with, and it could have underlined how far gone he was that he KNEW it would happen and didn't care.

Also:

The girls in grey need to come up with a solution for possession, since they don't have positively-charged slime. At least, not yet anyway. They got insanely lucky that Rowan was feeling generous enough to release Kevin. After that bit about the grenades being harmless to humans (which already irked me), I was terrified the movie was going to have them, like, blast him with the proton stream to pull Rowan out.

I'm glad they didn't because that would be extremely stupid, as the weapon's face-melting capabilities are well-documented. Nuclear energy and human flesh have never intermingled well. But their complete lack of options for dealing with a possessed individual is something I hope to see Holtzman address in her next round of upgrades.

Also, something else:

If that really was Ray Stantz in the taxi, why did he change his accent? It sounded like Akroyd was trying to sound more "New Yawk"

If it was Ray, it could have been that the character was putting up the accent to further pretend to be someone else so as to not be hounded by anyone after thirty years of mockery since people forgot about the giant marshmallow man and Statue of Liberty walking down the street.

Anyone ever think that Sony might end up crossing this over with Men in Black?

Before or after Men In Black crosses over with 21 Jump Street? That was rumored to be happening, right? Could have sworn I've heard that was being rumored to be happening for some reason.

It's not rumored, it is 100% happening.

I just remembered that little bit from when the Ghostbusters met with the mayor and part of the conversation made me think about a possible MIB crossover.

I would be down for a Ghostbusters/MIB crossover. I love both of those franchises.

I'd love it if a MIB / Ghostbusters crossover made a big part of the plot and humor out of both groups fighting over whether the threat was caused by aliens or ghosts (with neither group believing the other has any credibility), only for it to turn out to be a third thing entirely.

It's a demon. Which doesn't actually resolve the conflict.

  • Ghostbusters: It's an extraplanar entity manifesting in our world. That still falls under our purview.
  • MIB: It's an otherworldly invader, so it's still our jurisdiction.

Another option might be the vengeful spector of the alien dissected at Roswell.
