Renaming a trope requires some indication that the name is a poor one besides, "I think a lot of people might not know it." Especially when it's in dictionaries as a word used to mean exactly what we're using it for.
The Svengali has 87 wicks and just shy of 500 inbound, non-search-engine links. With those numbers (those are healthy numbers) you'll need to provide solid evidence of misuse, confusion or lack of use related to the name.

I know the concept of the trope, but I do think that it falls under Trope Namer Syndrome. Not to mention that not everyone coming in are familiar with Trillby or the character Svengali. Perhaps we could rename it to Manipulative Mentor or something?
