Episode 3 sure was...comedic. I couldn't help but smile at what was going on.
So, Chances that the reason they could pilot the G-self is because they're all Newtypes? And the colonel knows this (hence his "Love at first sight?" question)?

"No, the Singularity will not happen. Computation is hard." -Happy EntDon't Bell and Aida have the same eyes or something? Otherwise, yeah, that sounds reasonable
Something called the iris sign, yeah.
I love that their phones still have cords.
"You have pretty eyes!" "I get that all the time."
"No, the Singularity will not happen. Computation is hard." -Happy EntSo, this episode practically confirmed that the Research Division guy let Aida escape with the G-Self, probably knowing Bellri would surely follow, thus giving him the opportunity to prepare an assault on Aida's allies under the excuse of rescuing hostages. Speaking of which, Bellri and Noredo make for some very relaxed hostages, huh, and they were treated very well. Bellri in particular didn't seem phased at all.
I liked the action, although the show's current pacing reminds me a lot of Turn A - way too slow at the beginning, but with indications that it'll speed up soon. Then again, that could just be me, it's been a while since I've watched a Gundam show.
To me it seems like Bellri treats the whole thing like some sort of game and doesn't realize just how serious things really are.
Honestly, I have no idea how serious things are. (Never watched a gundam show before so I figured...why not. Possibly a bad idea, but I heard this was stand alone)
I feel like the tiniest bit of world exposition would help here.
On the plus side, Noredo turned out to be less annoying than I initially expected.
That's Tomino for you. He likes to tell stories by just throwing you into the world and slowly revealing bits and pieces of backstory and exposition throughout. The characters don't ever do those "As You Know" speeches to explain the workings of the world in detail. Tomino expects that viewers will pick up what they need to know from the clues and references his characters drop in casual conversations.
Which might actually be the better way to do it; Show, Don't Tell, after all. Of course, there's nothing saying you can't have big As You Know speeches, but those tend to work best when you have someone who hasn't been a part of the story's world up until now being the one explained to; we learn along with the character, and the whole process feels much more natural as a result.

This would work better if most dialogue wasn't exposition already, though
While Show, Don't Tell is good....you need to introduce elements carefully and have the non-shown stuff work in a way familiar to the reader. I really feel it hasn't worked quite well here.
They even had a perfect vehicle for exposition in Raynaria. I was expecting someone to explain some basic stuff to her at some point...but nope.
Eh, I've had fun so far.
Also, mech toilets aren't new to me (it's canon in Battle Tech that IS BattleMechs have cockpit toilets while Clan mechs lack them), but it's probably one of the best small details ever put into a Gundam show, period.
"Hipsters: the most dangerous gang in the US." - Pacific MackerelThere have been some interviews with Tomino that shed some more light on the world of Reconguista and how it relates to the Universal Century.
This article has a pretty good overview of what Tomino and his writers have said. There are some spoilers for Turn A Gundam present in the article, just so you know.
...yeah, I gotta agree there. Tomino's writing is... really not at its best here.
but HOW?You know what it reminds me of? Zeta Gundam.
Not in tone but in writing style. Especially with the seemingly random character actions.
The difference there is that Zeta took place in an established universe where people generally knew what the world looked like going in. Reconguista doesn't have that luxury.
Mostly just the standard criticisms. Did bring up that Tomino claimed to be making G-Reco for children, but I don't think anyone but him believes that. Sunrise certainly doesn't, with how they've been handling it
Honestly, I'm kind of liking the writing. Yeah, the dialogue is clunky, but he manages pretty decent exposition without people actually going out and *doing* exposition.
"No, the Singularity will not happen. Computation is hard." -Happy EntOkay, what the hell was that with Aida and the bridge bunny?
1. They were whispering to one another.
2. Aida was listening to something on the bunny's headset.
3. Both?

Am I the only one who loves the eyecatches? They're really dynamic and fun.
"No, the Singularity will not happen. Computation is hard." -Happy EntThe characters sure are flexible.
The OP is starting to grow on me.
I'm amazed that "The world is not square!" hasn't spawned a string of Time Cube references yet.
