According to IMDB this isn't the first ouija board movie ever made, just the third to have the title Ouija. There's also Witchboard, which my mom remembered to me when I showed her the trailer, which was apparently the first ouija board feature film released in '86.

Good to know that this film isn't charting new and unexplored venues of terrible and camp.

But that's a story for another time.

[up] Witchboard was alright. There were actually a couple decent scares when it wasn't rife with eighties cheese.

Then there was Witchboard 2, which had '90s cheese instead, but was basically the same thing with violent-er deaths.

And also, a third one I never saw.

Annnnyway, at one point, the Ouija movie was supposed to be a big-budget adventure. A Jumanji or Indiana Jones sorta thing, IIRC. And then Battleship happened.

Jumanji and Zathura were movies about board games, but were not based on board games- they are both adaptations of picture books by Chris Van Allsburg.

Clue and Battleship were based on board games, but not about people playing a board game.

Ouija is both based on a board game and about people playing a board game. The question is, is it designed/expected to boost sales of said board game? Coz this really doesn't seem to be the way to do it...

[up] I doubt that's the intention. More people are familiar with the ouija board as a horror trope than as a board game.

Looking for some stories?

So Weird did an episode with an Ouija board. Who wants to bet that will still be the superior product?

The movie doesn't look bad.

Though I remember seeing a movie with the title of Ouija. Looked like it came out in the 2000s or 2010s. Complete crap story with complete crap actors and to top it off, it was a Found Footage movie, which made it twice as bad. It was about a bunch of 20 something's playing with the old spirits and they were doing fine until one guy thinks his friend ratted him out to his gf (he was cheating and the board told her) so he steals it. Since they couldn't say goodbye it unleashed the killer spirit upon the group. It did look like a small budget film though, so meh.

I just got back from seeing it. It's not all that bad. The first half was pretty good, and the acting is okay.

If I have one big criticism about it though, it's that (without spoiling the specifics) the ending is basically "Oh crap, we need to add 20 minutes to this movie, let's repeat what we did ten minutes ago" IMO, though, it definitely doesn't deserve the 10% it currently has on Rotten Tomatoes.

Here's a question. Does anyone actually know how to play ouija? Like, the rules, how to win and what not? Chess Motifs aside, that's almost always treated like a game with strategy and end goals.

[up] You don't "win" at Ouija. You use it to pretend that you are contacting spirits.
