Alright, so I got the needed names for certain military divisions for my space opera. I thought that would be the hard part. I was wrong.

Now, I need some insignia for the Human Confederation Fleet and the 11th Pursuit Squadron of said fleet. Any ideas?

Well what do they do, exactly? Insignias as often as not take their imagery from the purpose of their wearers.

If the 11th is a pursuit squad, maybe a bird of prey or hound?

The Fleet represents the combined military strength of the Sol System and human outposts in surrounding star systems. The 11th Pursuit Squadron is a battlecruiser-based starfighter squadron that has earned a reputation similar to the Red Baron's Flying Circus.

Could you provide us with some history into this world of yours? Your descriptions are quite lacking. What are the other factions and how did they come about? The symbol/insignia shouldn't be too hard to figure out once you have a concrete idea of what the faction looks like as a whole. On the other hand, we can't help you if we don't know this information either.

Pretty much anything goes, and there needn't really be a theme to it. It might just be an in-joke to the unit's veterans, it might be a reference to a famous action they were in, or to the place they were founded.

This shows some unit insignia from the Battle Tech setting. No real uniting theme, and despite the faction they belong to being a Fantasy Counterpart Culture to feudal Japan, only two katanas show up.

Reality is for those who lack imagination.

As an example, one infantry unit in my own space-opera setting (a GURPS homebrew world I GM :P) uses stylized ancient greek theatre masks for their insignia, because they were started out as a militia unit formed in a community center where amateur theater groups would meet.

The Red Baron's Flying Circus, huh? Why not a giant foot, squashing their foes?wink

Thinking it over, I realized that the bird of prey suggestion would be perfect for the squadron, as their particular fighter has the name Hellhawk. As for the overall fleet, I was thinking a Chinese-style dragon encircling a group of stars. Please close down this thread, as I think I have everything I need.
