Originally this post started out with a huge wall-of-text explaining the story I've been working on and the given issue I'm asking about, but for the sake of efficiency I'll just throw this out there without context for now:

In a setting roughly corresponding to our Earth, pre-modern technology, say around the Turn of the Century (late 1800's), with humans being the only sentient species - how do you think a human/animal hybrid character - orphaned, with no others existing of their kind, them not even knowing what species they are - would fit in, be treated, coexist with humans? How would you portray this in a truly believable manner? Would /everyone/ vilify and shun this character, be afraid of or gawk at them?

More importantly - how would I portray this /without/ completely breaking said animal humanoid characters' spirit and rendering them embittered towards society?

Depends on the type of animal and the particular society they live in - half-human hybrids are a staple of mythology and folklore, so they're bound to affect perception. Not necessarily in a bad way though - I imagine something like a winged humanoid would even be revered. For that matter, given the frequency of severely disfiguring illnesses and injuries before the advent of modern medicine, appearance by itself took a back seat to culture and behavior in terms of social acceptance. Thus, a few curious looks notwithstanding, if the person in question is a good and moral Christian/Muslim/Whatever, I think they'd fit in without much trouble.
