Technically speaking, Ihei isn't a new character. She's one of the members of Squad 0, which showed up in Chapters 141 and 142. Very likely, she's the one that was helping Koori Ui. We just hadn't been shown who she was before now, which suggests we're going to be learning more about Arima's personal squad.

Speaking of characters, I wonder whether any others from the Novels will be introduced? We've got Chie and Matsumae so far, and besides Chie the other reoccurring characters from the novels seem to be Ikuma and Detective Morimine. Both would certainly bring an interesting perspective into things.

Eh, I wasn't even including the cameo characters in my count. I meant that :re started off by introducing the Quincke squad, Hanbee (plus Suzuya squad), Takeomi, Shimoguchi, Kanae, Matsumae, Chie, Croquette Monsieur, Scarecrow, Miza, Nutcracker...all apparently with the intent of at least side-character status. (Yes, not all are new exactly, in that they've appeared in side stories...but really, most of them ought to stay there.) The raid only managed to kill off Nutcracker and Big Madam, with a net influx of a whole bunch of new characters.

@The Curious Fan: I just caught the typo, but Madam A survived the auction, according to the omake. By crawling through the air vents. [lol]

[up]I wouldn't really count the nameless hooded figures in squad 0 as "previously introduced characters" in any sense.

New Chapter spoilers:

  • Kanae recalls a happier time, when he saw Shuu singing in the rain all happy. He remembers being in awe of how beautiful Tsukiyama was.
  • Kanae recalls getting super-jealous, seeing Tsukiyama and Chie.
  • It seems Kanae is considering Chie's advice to leave the household.
  • A maid and another servant call for help, because Shuu is flipping out and attacking everything with his kagune. Kanae is forced to use his kagune to help subdue him, at which point he goes catatonic again. Kanae sobs hysterically.
  • A team consisting of Ihei, Fura, Shiki, and his partner encounter a trio of Tsukiyama servants.
  • Cliffhanger is Sasaki visiting Uta at his shop!!!!

And the full Trump deck has been revealed! Some interesting hints in there. (Order: A, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King)

  • Jokers: Arima, Juuzou, Ghoul Takizawa, ???
  • Hearts: Anteiku Kaneki or Haise, Torso, Saiko, Yoriko, Souta, Kimi, Kuro and Shiro, Nico, Shinohara and Kuroiwa, Hinami, Kanae , Rize and White Kaneki, Yamori.
  • Diamonds: Tsukiyama, Naki, Urie, Hanbee, Akira's Cat (lol), Chie Hori, Kuramoto and Takeomi, Uta, Ui, Mougan, Amon, Akira, Donato Porpora.
  • Spades: Hide, Tatara, Mutsuki, Madam A and Taro-chan, Kazuo (the dude Nishiki killed), Nishiki, Hirako, Roma, Marude, Koma and Irimi, Mado, Noro (???!), and Shachi.
  • Clubs: Touka, Ayato, Shirazu, Banjou and the Gas-mask Trio, Misato, Takizawa (Human), Dr. Kanou, Itori, Hachikawa and Hogi, Houji, Yomo, Eto, Yoshimura.

So based on that, it seems like Hearts = Rinkaku, Diamonds = Koukaku, Spades = Bikaku, and Clubs = Ukaku.

The 8s are all Clowns, the 2s are all Aogiri, the 3s are all Quinx, and the 9s are all CCG. Interestingly, the 7s are primarily CCG-associated.....but Kanou and the Twins defected. Could this hint at Hirako's squad going rogue in the future?

Spoilers:

  • Haise talks with Uta, who apparently confirms he didn't send the book?
  • Hirako meets with Arima.
  • Hairu vs. Matsumae, both these ladies are badasses.
  • Kanae visits an injured Matsumae later, and asks her advice.
  • Takeomi, Shirazu, and Saiko visit a cafe.
  • Their waitress, who Takeomi seems to know well, is Yoriko!!! YORIKO IS BACK!!!

Come to think of it, why is Tsukiyama's entourage feeding him ghoul flesh anyway? It supposedly tastes awful to ghouls, and his father knows it'll just drive Tsukiyama insane without turning him into a true kakuja.

Holy crap some readers pointed out that Furuta (the new investigator Kijima's assistant) has appeared in Tokyo Ghoul before - Touka mistook him for Kaneki at the university in chapter 117.

Good question, It'll probably be explained in the next few chapters.

I wonder whether Tsukiyama will get a kakuja or whether he'll die in this arc.

That's a very "convincing" lie that Uta came up with there...

Hairu is impressive, and also kind of amusing. And Yoriko's back! Can't say I ever found her all that interesting, but perhaps she'll act as another link to the past.

I'm not sure I understand why Chie is asking Kanae to choose between Tsukiyama and the family. What options does he have that might save Tsukiyama at the cost of the family?

You know, I'm not so sure I want to know what happened to Hide.

Either he became a snack for Kaneki, or he might've ended up in Doctor Kanou's "care". Even I'm not ready to see Hide come back like Seidou. If a goof like Seidou can become like that...

An odd thought came to me: What are the odds that Takizawa is going to come back roughly three years after the Anteiku raid with a full kakuja? Pineapple trees take three years to mature after all.

Holy crap, spoilers are already leaking. O_O !!!!

  • Takeomi moved around a lot as a kid, due to his father's job. He was classmates with Yoriko in elementary school.
  • Sasaki is a frequent Guest Lecturer at the Junior Academies and extremely popular with the students. This is how Mutsuki first met him, and why he calls Sasaki "Sensei". Juuzou notes that he's never been invited to Lecture, and when Hanbee asks the others on the squad chase him off.
  • Sasaki meets the dude that tortured Yamori!!!! His name is Goumasa Tokage.
  • Tokage claims that the 2nd Junior Academy is a school for "bad kids". He asks about Mutsuki, who he claims was a particularly bad kid.
  • Dr. Shiba explains to Urie that half-Ghouls develop "cell rods" in their body through repeated injury, and this increases their strength. He shows a body scan of Sasaki, whose body is riddled with them. So Urie starts doing training to intentionally injure his muscles, and then uses his RC cells to heal them.
  • Chie meets with Kanae, and tells him that helping Tsukiyama is easy — they just have to tell him Kaneki is alive. When Kanae protests, she explains that everything started with Kaneki's "death" and this is how they will save Tsukiyama. She explains that she's actually afraid of dying, but wants to live her life having fun. Tsukiyama is fun, so she wants to save him.
  • Kanae delivers the envelopes from Chie to Tsukiyama, who begins weeping when he sees the photos of Sasaki and asks for more information.

Hell yeah. (Or maybe not, considering how the studio already ruined things.)

Second OVA announced, for release on Christmas Day. It will be based on Chapter 3 of the first novel, meaning we're getting the Wacky Adventures of Tsukiyama and Chie animated.

Oh man, young Takeomi is hilarious. He's really got the Rock Lee thing going for him.

I wasn't expecting Yamori's torturer to turn up in the main story, I rather got the impression from Jason's flashback that he killed him during the escape.

And so now we know why Chie says Kanae has to choose between (Shuu) Tsukiyama and his family. I heard of a paranoia-inducing wild mass guess that Chie is affiliated with the clowns, because of how she says she wants life to be "fun". Though it's probably implausible, since she's human (in itself, not an unsurmountable objection though) and has also been affiliated with Tsukiyama forever.

Spoilers are out.

  • Uta talks to Yomo at the end of the chapter. Also Kiijima torture, he cut the captured Ghoul's tongue out.
  • New masks for the Qs?
  • Tsukiyama sees Haise and wonders why he doesn't remember him.

I wondered why Kiijima cut out the tongue, then I remembered Ghoul Regeneration...

...that Ghoul is not going to have a fun time...

He also cut it out to pass it along to the other ghouls along with a message that if they kill him they may be able to find their captured comrade.

[up]People still believed that? I thought Gourmet attempting to stop Kaneki from going on to fight CCG was enough proof that he doesn't consider Kaneki food anymore. Infact I was under the impression that those two were actually decent friends before Kaneki left...
