So, we have a trope page for Sunless Sea but no forum topic!

I picked this up yesterday and promptly lost four hours of my life to the Cthuluesque mythos of Fallen London's expansion into "proper" gaming.

It really expands the world and has that great roguelike vibe to it, but with transference of skills to "legacy" characters.

It's pretty simple to control and shares the "Storylets" that the original game has (But without that energy requirement). Your only limit is your currency, which dictates how much fuel and supplies you can carry, which in turn influences how far you can travel to make even more money and upgrade the ship.

It's still early access with more things being added, but it all looks promising.

I considered getting it, but my current backlog of games should be enough for now. I'll keep my eyes open in the future. It definitely looks awesome.

So finally get to play it after getting my main PC back (my old Mac Book is so bad it can't run this without chugging BALDY)...quite fun, but hard, as expected. First game got killed by the Lifebag thing detonating...

Question: do I use up a torpedo component after every shot? Was afraid to buy it if I do, since it's not cheap.

I'm on Captain number 3. There's a bit of grind there, but once you have a route worked out and you've done some exploring, you can start to take more risks.

Those lifebergs are EVIL though. The combat is tense, a bit weird, but fits the template. But it can get VERY VERY grindy to start with until you have enough money to either get a will (To preserve some progress) or to survive beyond the "safer" harbours.

It's stressful in a good way. And the lore is wonderful.

^^Yup, though its raelly powerful and requires less illumination than salvo.

Also, first thing you should do is no matter what you want to get is to get the darn elegant seaside house tongue I mean seriously, even if you were planning to buy something else, get it first. I don't know if you need the will for it, but it allows you to retire and move on the next character while still retaining the seaside house and it resets the quests like character's death. So no need to ever spend the money on the house again and you can get the will much easier since you don't need to pay the house first. Just don't mess up before you can buy the will with your next character unless you want to waste the money you bought the house with

^ How much powerful is it compared to normal cannon?

Well, normal does something like 10 on average damage with beginning iron stats right? Torpedo does something like 30 or 50 I don't remember, either way, its notable stronger than basic salvo and much faster to use since it requires even less illumination

Still haven't upgraded beyond a slightly better turret. Working out all the quirks in terms of how your stats effect everything. Also, making money can take a while unless you get good with the secrets and island reports. Managed to make a start on the box deliveries, not sure where it's all going.

Also, because it's Fallen London I'm never quite sure whether to embrace weird opportunities or take the rational approach such as when you get the strange lady who asks to join the crew while you're at zee

Definitely need to work on getting the house as well.

Also: is there a point to get normal shot turret only when I can get shot/torp hybrid at the same cost?

That really should be fixed.

I think the stats might be little different?*shrugs*

JerekLaz Since: Jun, 2014

I think it's more options: do you want to buy torpedoes or have them take up space in your hold?

A lot of stuff is going to change once the early access ends, and they're pumping out a fair few changes as we speak, with stats, trade routes and the like being tweaked.

I'm still on the fence regarding the combat. On the one hand it's an interesting idea with illumination. On the other, it doesn't quite grip me as mucha s the exploration and world building side does.

^, ^^ But there's no stat difference between the 2 version except with one have torp tube...same cost and everything...(not sure on cargo space tho, but still)

Still yeah, need tweaking.

Also huh, seems like you can head to the surface...guess I'll do it after this run...used the money I supposed to buy the crate of souls from the Khans to buy myself a house instead...so end up exploring to the map's south edges...just what is Dawn Machine?

i think the torpedoes take up cargo space, so you can go for a turret that does basic damage but needs illumination and doesn't need ammo, or a torpedo gun that DOES need ammo but requires less illumination to use.

Not sure what going to the surface does (In the lore, if you die in Fallen London you can't ever head to the surface, as you become part of The Correspondence... or something. et us know if the story is worth it!

Also, some flavour text on the monsters:

http://www.failbettergames.com/a-sightseers-guide-to-sunless-sea-part-five/

The lifeberg one is... creepy: Those – rifts – in the Lifeberg’s surface. Are they mouths? Lifebergs do not breathe. They kill from malice, not hunger. But they speak. Dear Christ, they speak.

^ From what I read the surface seems to be a REALY great way to reduce terror but you risk your crew (and possibly yourself) dying.

you can't head to the surface if you die because the stars are eldritch entities named judgements who decide what Is and what Is Not, coming back from the dead Is Not, and their light will dispose of you, hence why you can only come back in the neath, since it's hidden from sunlight

[up] Which is why I love Fallen London!

Of course, I have no where near gone far in enough in that story to know that stuff, I'm still doing tea with possible demons and writing novels, not actually finding Deep Meaningful Things out. Which is mainly because its SO slow paced.

Sunless sea, so far, has been breakneck by comparison. Seriously. And it keeps killing me. The combat I find really irksome. The rest of the game is lovely though.

^^ I know, I'm just saying that you CAN go there, but you just can't STAY (at least in this game...normally in the verse if you die in the Neath I don't think you can hit the sun at all). Still seems like great place to reduce terror tho, if expensive on fuel and supply wise. But hey, if your ship have enough cargo hold...

Have this on my Steam wishlist (and now this thread on my watchlist!), so avoiding spoilers, but I'm looking forward to when this releases proper (I'm not too keen on early access for this right now).

Good to hear it's enjoyable, a high seas rogue-like sounds like tons of fun to me!

Geez, no new posts despite game being released and zubmarine expansion coming up? xD

Anyway, wondering if there are any players interested in trying out fallen london .-. I finally decided today to test it out to earn some small bonus stuff in sunless sea since there are apparently few really small stuff, and I noticed there is apparently one of those "Invite someone who hasn't played before"(unless I misunderstood, I don't really get all cards in this game xD) things in this game, so if anyone is interested I could invite them and see what you get for doing that without checking from wiki xD

I finally managed to get my freaking merchant vessel.

Only.

I kinda spent all my money on it and though I am by no means running on fumes I am concerned I wont make enough money to sustain the fuel and supplies demand of it.

God dammit.
