An antagonistic creature of immense killing capacity, be it a monster, robot, superhuman etc, backhands the protagonist or another important character out of their way, instead of instantly killing them with whatever array of deadly abilities and devices they possess; said protagonist or important character flies across the room, often hits a wall, and is presumably knocked unconscious. The antagonist immediately forgets about them, only to be killed or thwarted by them shortly thereafter, to their immense surprise. The absurdity of the situation stems from the fact that, in most cases the blow which sends the victim flying across the room could've easily been used to kill or terminally incapacitate them.

The most recent example I can think of is from a Game of Thrones episode from last season, in which Samwell Tarly is confronted by a White Walker. The creature is fully capable of instantly killing him with a mere touch (and has demonstrated to be unscrupulously inclined to), yet it slaps him to the side and then slowly walks toward Gilly, only to be stabbed in the back by Sam.

I have been trying to prove to a friend that this is an overused cliche, and I was hoping tvtropes would help as a reference.

Greetings.

Wanted to note that tropes are "storytelling devices" not necessarily "overused cliches". Also, that we have Lost And Found if you are looking for a trope - this forum is not really the place.

I don't know we have such a trope.

[up] Yes, this needs to be taken to Lost And Found if it hasn't already.
