The Bureau of Multi-Dimensional Artifacts

Go To

kkhohoho Since: May, 2011

Across the depths and bounds of the multiverse, there exist countless different dimensions, and many worlds within them. In these worlds and these dimensions, there are worlds where you can believe a man can fly; worlds where talking dogs can say 'Ruh-Rho', and where giant robots fight over the future of man's destiny. Where aliens exist, and where both they and mankind venture to discover the final frontier. But at the same time, all of these worlds have had an impact on our own. There are people within our own universe whose subconsciousness' are particularly sensitive, and so they 'pick up' on the adventures and exploits of these countless other worlds, not realizing that what they are seeing is anything but fiction. But they do not realize this, and neither does most of the world. Most, but not all.

At some point, for reasons as of yet unknown, a crack began to form in our universe. It was unseen, and no living matter could pass through it, but that did not mean it was inconsequential, for while organic matter could not pass through it, inorganic matter could. And while they did not appear in great numbers, every now and then, something would show up. A magic wand, a raygun, a small spacehip, and more. It eventually got to the point where the government, by now aware of this danger to our reality, decided that enough was enough, and decided to form an organization devoted to collecting these artifacts once believed to be fiction, and to perhaps find a way to send them back and keep them from bleeding into our universe. To that end, the Bureau of Multidimensional Artifacts was formed, devoted to rounding up any such artifacts that popped into our dimension before they caused major problems, and at the same time, attempt to stop the objects from coming in altogether. But little do they know the true reasons for the crack, and of the mysterious beings seeking to use it to their own advantage...

Hello there! After taking a hiatus from the RP scene, I'm back, although with an RP that wasn't exactly created by me. The original RP was created by Stratofarius, but he left it not long after it started, and so it was up to me and another troper that I unfortunately can't remember the username of to continue it. Eventually, it came to an end, but now, I'm looking to bring it back.

The general idea here is that objects from any work of fiction have begun to 'fall' from their original worlds to our own; from anything as high-end as a Tardis or the Deathstar to something as simple as the whip of Indiana Jones. But many of these objects, or 'artifacts', can do any number of things, and can have deadly repercussions in our world; while a laser-beam may seem like nothing special in a sci-fi setting, it could be absolutely lethal in our world. These objects need to be collected and kept under safe observation, and you are all agents devoted to serving that end. And speaking of 'you all'...

As agents of an organization devoted to keeping these artifacts secret, you normally cannot use them yourselves, as that would defeat the purpose. However, that doesn't mean you're powerless to deal with the often dangerous situations that you face. Each of you has already had (and must have,) previous experience in one activity or another, but in this line of work, you need something 'more'. To that end, the Bureau, inspired by the Superhero comics that a number of artifacts have come from, have been able to develop their own means of granting superpowers via chemical treatments, gamma rays, etc. It turns out that the feats that worked in other universes can work in their own so long as they use the right methods, and some of these artifacts provide those methods, even if not used themselves. This may well have major repercussions later down the line, but in the meantime, you can submit up to two characters for now, and possibly more later on. Also, your character can only have one superpower at the beginning of the RP, though this may change later on. Additionally, if an artifact plays into your character's backstory, you must submit a sheet for that artifact. (More on that later down the page.) All artifacts must come a pre-established work of fiction, and must be identified. You cannot simply say that your character 'found an artifact', and call it good; it has to come from somewhere.

  • Character Sheet

At the same time, you can also feel free to submit an artifact to the RP, which will be used either as a stored artifact at the Bureau's facility, or in some other capacity. Like with the Character's, you can submit up to two artifacts.

Final Notes: The Bureau isn't an organization limited to the USA. That is where it may have started, but by now, there are branches all over the world, with the game's USA Bureau being just one such branch, if still the original. The Bureau also started in the late 1930's, back when Science-Fiction, Superheros, Fantasy, etc., really started getting going.

Other than that, I think that's it for now. Feel free to ask me any questions that you may have, but if not, here's the Sign-Up Sheet.

Here's hoping to see you in the RP.

  • Name: Dr. Edmund Halley Bright
  • Age: 27
  • Personality: Dr. Bright is a rather eccentric man, prone to pranks and generally screwing with people's heads. He has a sarcastic bent to him when annoyed and generally tends to make life a tad bit more surreal whenever he's around. However, when it comes down to the line, he can be deadly serious and ruthless, willing to do anything to make sure containment is achieved or maintained.
  • Appearance: It's time for... SCIENCE!!
  • Backstory: Dr. Bright has degrees in many areas of science, along with being an immense Otaku, and was recruited by the bureau early on as a researcher trying to figure out where these artifacts came from as well as why and how. He proved himself extremely capable with the identification and containment of many artifacts and has since been assigned to accompany retrieval teams as a consulting scientist/identifier.
  • Skills
    • Is extremely knowledgeable about both the sciences and the various worlds the artifacts are coming from
    • Has decent physical fitness, along the lines of someone who practices in a dojo up to thrice a week
    • Can use a firearm with decent proficiency, could pass as a police officer on an accuracy test
  • Power: Dr. Bright has been endowed with the ability to replicate himself, his consciousness is shared by each of the replications and he cannot be truly killed unless all of his replicates are killed as well as his mind can hop from clone to clone on a whim. The clones are physically identical to Dr. Bright. He can only create up to 10 at once. Clothes are replicated while carried objects are not. The process of creating a clone is rather unusual in that if a body is killed, it cannot be remade for a period of 24 hours.

[up][up]Seems mostly fine, but I'll have to ask you to tone down your power just slightly. First, you might want to make it so that he can only create up to 10 clones, and not just control them. 10 is already a bit much, but I'm willing to accept that under another alteration; when a clone dies, he would stay dead until the end of the current mission. This would prevent you from just creating another clone of yourself willy-nilly and being virtually exempt from damage. This way, you're not so exempt. Is that all alright with you?

[up]You may already be aware of this, but you're going to have to work on your Character Sheet.

Felt like a character like this is needed:

•Character Sheet

•Name: Greg Neric

•Age: Late 40s.

•Personality: Greg is highly intelligent, highly trained government agent. On the job tries to maintain his professionalism and is constantly frustrated by team-mates who prefer to dress and act casual. On his off duty hours enjoys playing strategy games such as chess. He didn't know much about popular culture before starting the job and often forced to rely on his teammates to figure out what a particular artifact does.

•Appearance: looks like Agent Coulson from Agents of SHIELD

•Backstory: Agent Greg Neric applied to the FBI after graduating with honors from college. Has worked in sevrral different Federal agencies and has a wide variety of contacts. Greg has only been recently transferred to the Bureau.

•Skills: When younger, Neric was an expert marksmen with a pistol and trained on a variety of federal investigation procedures. While age has slowed him a bit, he can still be dangerous. He is also skilled at negotiating beuracracy, and has a network of low-level contacts at various agencies.

•Power: Agent Neric has an extensive knowledge of government forms, including I Ds. He has been issued a piece of psychic paper (Doctor Who) which can take on the appearance of any document Greg can visualize. Working with the paper has made Greg able to sense when something is just a psychic illusion, but can still be fooled by other types of illusion.

Y'know I was just thinking about this the day of the making of this thread. Not the first time something like this has happened.

I swear I'm psychic.

  • Name: Newton "Newt" Galippse
  • Age: 28
  • Personality: Newt is pretty much your average nerd; he spends more time on his couch than doing any sort of job, he snacks whenever he has nothing else to do, he's absent-minded, and he has extensive knowledge of almost any sort of fictional universe. Of course, he can still hold his ground in a fight and isn't afraid to throw himself into the face of danger...not without good reason, obviously.
  • Appearance: Whaddup? (necklace not included)
  • Backstory: Newt used to be a lazy kid, living out of his father's basement with no actual job, aside from selling rare collectibles on the internet. He used to be a hard-working electrician, though, with that as his career for nearly a whole year. But his company had to make cut-backs if they wanted to pull out of bankruptcy range, and thus he was one of the many fired and replaced. Since then, he's never been able to keep a normal job for more than a few weeks, since he could never find something suitable to his talents. However, during one of his searches for a new item to sell, he comes into contact with an artifact; The web-slingers from The Amazing Spider-Man, which he though to be either the actual props from the movie or a really well-made replica. Of course, looking like prime merchandise to be sold, he simply took it along with him. Eventually a couple agents of the Bureau caught up to him and began asking about what he's collected so far, to see if he knew anything about them or it. He didn't, of course, but the agents were quite surprised at his extensive knowledge on the items in question. As such he was quickly hired into the Bureau much to his excitement.
  • Skills: Aside from the aforementioned nerd-brain, he's a decent shot with a number of firearms. He's also a pretty great chef.
  • Power: Two words; Electricity Control. Think inFAMOUS, in the sense that he can shoot bolts from his hands and absorb the electricity of nearby electronics.

Hope everything's in order.

[up][up]No offense, but there's a few things I'd like you touch up on.

1.What 'artifact' did your character posses? Look,I didn't think I needed to clarify this, but here it is; all artifacts must come a pre-established work of fiction, and must be identified. You cannot simply say that your character 'found an artifact', and call it good. With that said, please specify what artifact your character found and what universe if comes from. I'll be adding this to the first post soon enough.

And 2.I'm sorry, but you're going to have to change your character's backstory, at least partially. In order for the Bureau to not only consider you for use on the field, but also to give you Superpowers, you need to have already proven to them that you can take care of yourself. Any additional training they may give you only builds on that previous experience. And as it is, your character has little-to-no previous experience to speak of. Or maybe he does, but you haven't really given it outside of some amateurish gunplay. Gladonost is a scientist, Troyhand Hawk is a bouncer, Nodrog is an FBI agent, and you are... a jobless nerd. To sum up, your character needs to have had a decent amount of exposure to a particular field in order to be given Superpowers and go on missions. Otherwise, he might as well just be a consultant. As for what that field would be, that would be up you. I'm not trying to be harsh; I'm just clarifying the rules and nature of this RP. Your character has had multiple jobs, right? Just pick one, make sure that it gives him some proper experience for field work, and say that he was on that job for an extended period of time, (6 months to a year,) but eventually left and/or was fired, and hasn't been able to hold a job since. I think that would work.

Hmm, I have a couple ideas: My main one is for a lady agent who was recruited after she fell into an investigation (I'm still working out how, exactly...) and turned out to have a knack for finding and remembering information about the artifacts. Thus she came to work at the Bureau first on a somewhat consult-y, research assistant job, and then got to be a field agent after she was one of the few people to recognize an artifact that needed a field mission. After that she did more missions of the sort and became a full-time field agent.

I don't really know what her power could be, though...

Weird actually isn't just a bouncer, he was also a thug for hire.

[up][up] maybe sensing artifacts is her power?

[up][up][up]That could work. You could work as the Bureau's electrician when not on missions, and your knowledge of electricity would be a great assist in terms of controlling you power. So long as the Bureau gave you some proper training, that could work.

[up][up]Why don't you develop her personality some more and see if you can't develop a power off of that?

[up]We already have someone who can do that. I'd prefer each character have a unique power of their own.
