Did I ever mention how much I HATE all those similar sounding or same sounding but differently written words in English?
Laughs in French
It should be noted the court system in the United States considers Sheriff Arpaio a criminal who violated the civil rights of Americans and should have spent time in jail. It's just Trump stepped in and pardoned him—which many believe is a testament to the idea Trump is going to pardon any of his supporters who don't cooperate with investigations into him.
Which shouldn't be possible but we live in an insane time.
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Remember a couple months back he was having his lawyers explore the feasibility of a president pardoning himself.
Fresh-eyed movie blogThere are ways to override a presidential pardon, right? I don't know if there's enough political capital to spend on that right now, but I vaguely remember hearing it was possible.
In theory, perhaps, but I don't know that it's ever been tested. The Supreme Court would definitely be involved. The working principle, at least in the Joe Arpaio case, would be that the President cannot pardon someone for contempt of court, because doing so allows him to essentially override the judiciary branch of government.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"In simple terms, no, not really. You can do almost anything but in the current hung jury state of the Republican Party (let alone Democrats), no one has the capital to change it.
We can list Arpaio as an RL Karma Houdini.
If there's any good news, it's the fact he isn't Sheriff anymore but that's because he lost his 7th bid.

Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters.Posting to note that John Oliver's Last Week Tonight just won the Emmy for Outstanding Variety Talk Series as well as the Emmy for Outstanding Writing For A Variety Series. Congratulations to Oliver for his great work!
Can I say that?

Absolutely. That's awesome.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Well, the Forensic Science episode freaked me right out. I knew CSI wasn't reality, and I'd heard about the fingerprint incident with per Spain but wow!
He veered into court proceedings, but it sounds like sheer inertia/lazy note (along with misplaced camaraderie) is dooming alot of people...And this episode on top of already widespread knowledge about eye witness testimony...
Have had issues with youtube embeds recently.

The Crystal Caverns A bird's gotta sing.So I'm gonna ask what everyone here thinks: Why does The Inspectors not have a Trope page.
"You can reply to this Message!"It needs one, but I'm horribly lazy.
Just wanted to say that random memories of the Dialysis episode of LWT helped be during an oral presentation today (titled "Kidney functions in mammals"). Watching Oliver really is important in life.
When's this show coming back from holiday break? We kinda need him for the Net Neutrality thing.
It's not on holiday break, the season's over. Presumably it'll be back in February, just like every other season.

The Crystal Caverns A bird's gotta sing. This episode was not a masterpiece in informativeness, but it's a very strong season-opener on an emotional level. I really liked the ending. Crowning Moment of Awkward Heartwarming.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.I think it was necessary. I have been trying for months now to explain US Americans how much damage Trump has already done, and that no matter what, Putin has already won. The US went into this century as the last big superpower and while the actions of Bush really didn't help, it was Trump who pushed it off its pedestal within a few weeks in office. Having the most major incidents (yeah, those weren't even ALL of them) lined-up might help.
The US is still the only global superpower (Russia and China are regional powers). They're the only one that maintains military bases worldwide. They've got more economic power than anyone else. The fact that Trump is widely disliked and not respected doesn't change that. The fact that he's limited to hard power because he's no good at soft power makes him dangerous, because he's still got more hard power than anyone else on the planet.
No one denies that, but American influence has relied a lot on diplomacy and allies all over the world. If Trump can't be bothered maintaining those, America's soft power will go down in the short-term, and in the long-term, the hard power will also decrease significantly.
It also means that while the rest of the world should be worried, the more time goes on, the less it should be worried, because the US power is progressively going down, making it less likely Trump will behave like a global threat and more like an entertaining nuisance. Oliver didn't mention it, but the most significant international faux-pas Trump might have done is the Jerusalem vote, because this one is going to make Europe and the Middle-East mad for years.
Of course you need the ability to understand what 'long-term' means, unlike POTUS.

Never underestimate the importance of soft power, and how much hard power is reliant on it. The US is partly so powerful because it has bases all over Europe it can use, and they are strategically very important. Among other things, some of the nuclear weapons are actually stored in Germany...those might, just might, have slipped through, but due to Trump, there is now more noise around the US finally removing them.
If Trump starts a war, he can't count on the usual allies. The NATO states only have to act in defence, they are not obliged to act if one member has been the aggressor. And even if the US gets attacked first, they might move slow under the current circumstances. Trump's display at NATO really didn't go over well.
Not to mention that part of the reason why the US has so much more military than anyone else is because anyone else who could keep up has decided to trust the US that it won't use its military against them. This trust is gone, which is why the EU is currently working on restructuring its defence.

Oh, now you are looking like a lost cause. But this guy was around in international TV long before Trump was a thing. He was one of the reasons why I considered Trump actually winning a distinct possibility, because if a guy like this can be sheriff, a guy like Trump was a shoe-in for president.
