That scream practically begged for that sin.

I wouldn't be surprised if that sin was made with that scream in mind.

I had thought they did an episode on Ghostbusters. Turns out it was just a What's the Damage episode. Forgot that was a thing.

I really enjoyed that movie, but man does it have its issues. Aside from bankrupting Square, of course.

What Fighteer said.

Remove the Final Fantasy name and it was an okay movie. Not great, possibly even not good, but I had fun.

I very much suspect that the Final Fantasy name is what got any audience to the theaters whatsoever. To have the film have nothing at all to do with the FF series other than a few stylistic elements and shout-outs, of course, was a much more fundamental problem than just the choice of name. It's a bait-and-switch that guaranteed that a good chunk of that audience would leave the theater shaking their heads and asking, "WTF, Square," killing any word of mouth that might have saved its sales numbers.

The thing is that Square needed the name to justify the price tag of production, because who would go see a big-budget CGI sci-fi film by an unknown studio without some kind of brand recognition attached to it? It's a Catch-22.

Of course, they could have tied it into the FF franchise if they'd wanted to. I wonder who made that brilliant decision.

If they had chosen an existing final fantasy game and made it off that it might have worked (I'm thinking 7 or 9.)

Oh, so that's what that movie is about.

Seems like your standard JRPG plot, honestly.

At the time that The Spirits Within started production, everyone was still bug-nuts over Final Fantasy VII, meaning the field was ripe for some sort of tie-in film. Advent Children didn't do that badly, after all. It just boggles the mind.

For me, I'll say that the world-building and character dynamics of the Final Fantasy games have always been their biggest attraction for me; I never really cared for the ham-fisted environmental messages tied into the "spirit of the Planet" theme. When Cid started expounding on "Gaia theory" in The Spirits Within, I groaned a little bit. "Really, Square, you're going back to the Lifestream well? Again?"

All Final Fantasy games are actually linked by the same universe...allegedly..

None of the games are connected beyond a few stylistic elements.

Addition: Had the film been more inspired by a European Medieval setting, it'd probably have done better.

It's a Word of God thing that the whole franchise takes place in a shared universe. It must be populated by a ton of Earthlike, albeit very very small, planets.

The shared universe thing has always been dumb, especially the forced connection between VII and X/X-2.

If they made a FF movie before they started to put higher technology into FF(FFVI wasn't that far technology-wise. Just steampunk and magic), it'd feel more at home.

That said, Spirits Within wasn't a bad movie, it just didn't capture the Fantasy part of FF, which is namely magic or something extremely similar. It was pretty much Tech VS Ghosts, which isn't really how FF is designed. Tech exists, pretty much since the first game, but it's closer to magical tech instead. They forgot that part.
