hey! I sincerely apologize if this is in the wrong place. I also apologize for my first post being here and not in the intro thread, but for some reason it wants me to wait 24 hours before I can post there. wat. anyway, I'm working on a podcast with a few of my friends from work; we're both reasonably knowledgeable and stridently opinionated when it comes to pop culture (specifically nerd culture but yeah), which seems like a good recipe for yammering away on the internets. it's somewhat inspired by the articles and podcasts on Cracked but more heavily inspired (in my case at least) by those on this site, so I figured it'd be helpful to get some input from the tropers here.

if anyone is interested in contributing opinions or suggestions, the first 'episode' we're trying to compile is a two-part topic. first of all, we want to look at the happy accidents of pop culture - wildly successful films, tv shows, video games whose success seems in hindsight to be the product of serendipitous circumstances. what went right and why? the flip side of that topic is the sad multitude of films/shows/games/etc. that appeared to have absolutely everything going for them, only for circumstances to conspire against them and for them to totally flop - or worse, to end up as largely forgotten mediocrities. where did they go wrong?

I realize this is frequently trodden ground for a lot of sites, not least this one, but we're trying to put a new spin on our format and go our own way while acknowledging and appreciating what others have previously done. if this isn't something people are interested in and it turns out I just spammed your board for no good reason, I'll understand completely. if you do have some amount of interest in what we're trying to do, I would eagerly welcome any input about the topic(s) I mentioned or about the podcast in general. thanks for your time and have a great day!

p.s.: when I'm not at work (on break I swear!) I'll come back with an avatar and a decent profile and the rest of it. peace.

Well, you can always invite a random troper every podcast as a guest speaker. You should probably do a signup event or something so you don't accidentally invite one of the shyer ones.

Welcome to the forums!

AT LAST.

thanks for the advice! yeah, I'd enjoy having guest contributors at some point in the near future, but at the moment I was mainly hoping for input on the topic itself, like examples and stuff. I'd be happy to credit any contributors. sometimes it's hard to think of fresh examples either of surprise successes or surprise flops that haven't been beaten to death already. obviously star wars has been cited as an excellent example of a film NOBODY expected to be the overwhelming cultural force it became, but everyone mentions that one. now that the site will let me add posts and everything I hope to be able to dig into more conversations very soon...
