"Tuckered boys"

Yeah, off-model Sumo is weird, but seen only for a second.

Well, being sleep deprived is a Hell of a drug.

Also, the dream animation looks similar to Rick And Morty 's.

That episode rocked, more standard goofiness and they didn't go too far off into the surrealism of the hallucinations. It's also nice to see Jeff get a win once in a while (though he fell asleep in the end).

Edit: I also like the humor convention when someone starts screaming and somebody else starts screaming, not because they're scared but just as a response to the screaming. Reminds me of this

Tonight's episode was good too. Poor Josh, but at least he brought it on himself this time by trying to hunt down Clarence. I also liked the look at how Jeff's mind works.

"Water park" was quite the episode. But I still worry about Clarence's mental state after talking to "Squirty". He becomes more and more like this kid. It really seems like they're trying to cover Autism without trying to make it about Autism.

Oh and Josh gets royally fucked. Big shocker.

He's just melodramatic and imaginative, he's not mentally deficient or anything.

He reminds me a bit of Calvin

"Where the wild Chads are"

I thought "Lil' buddy Clarence" had issues, but this time, he goes all out just to make a camping trip go his way. But they do get off easy in the end.

Anyone else hear the Adventure Time Easter egg?

A pretty overt reference, actually. It's a TV show in Clarence's world, though apparently on antenna broadcast.

Another good episode. Action Chad go!

I enjoyed this week of episodes of Clarence.

I've noticed that the show's humor has been steadily getting more surreal over time. And to be honest, I'm a little disappointed. The Deader than Disco page for Western Animation points out that you don't see that many cartoons nowadays that focus on regular people doing regular things, like what many Nickelodean cartoons were like. I admired that the show was willing to tackle a style that had kind of dropped off, and I thought it did a good job of portraying the wonder of childhood while keeping the psycedelic elements to a minimum. I don't mind the show having a really trippy episode every once in awhile, I would just prefer it be the exception to the rule.

[up]I'm kinda with you on that. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy the show but not as much. When I first went into this show I was expecting a simple, if a bit weird slice of life cartoon. I didn't mind some of the weird moments early on(Like Sumo going all off model in the dating episode or the cave family version of Clarence's family at the end of the dinner party episode), but I feel like the weirdness is getting played up a bit too much recently. At least from the episodes I last saw. I didn't catch the episodes during the week of premieres so maybe those weren't too weird.

You can't stay too grounded for too long, though. And the show hasn't really gone that bizarre, or if it has, it's stylized takes on the mundane like "Goldfish Follies," or flat-out imagination trips like "Suspended" or "Rough Riders Elementary." "Tuckered Boys" featured hallucinations, yes, but was about the normal childhood challenge of trying to stay up all night. The other episodes last week were pretty grounded, aside from "Where the Wild Chads Are."

I guess. I just kinda get a bit tired of some of the weirdness in the show at times. Which is saying something since I love weird shit. And like I said, I don't dislike the show. I still enjoy watching it from time to time.

Good writers would know how to keep the show entertaining while still being grounded.

That's all semantics to me. I don't care if it's a dream, a hallucination or a non-canon episode, all it amounts to is a focus on the surreal over the mundane.

Still, it's more or less a slice-of-life but it features a more entertaining bonus with random surreal wonders on the side. Besides, if it was too normal, we would just have another Doug / Hey Arnold clone.

I think it's an oversimplification to say that fewer weird elements would instantly make it a clone of those shows. It still has its own style, its own characters, its own kind of humor, and so forth. It's not like those shows didn't have their own unusual elements. I remember Doug was fond of fantasy sequences, and while Hey Arnold was largely realistic, that show could bring in some weird characters and situations.

To reiterate, I'm not opposed to the show dipping into weird humor every now and then, I just feel that recently the show has been swinging a bit too much in one direction.

Half the appeal of Doug was his ability to wander into imagine spots, i thought.

Hey Arnold did the same, or just got into bizarre situations that were apparently 100% real (like Pigeon Man or the Rat King)

Here'ws a better commentary of what I though of this "Clarence Bomb"... Including the episodes I missed takikng about right away.

Yeah, I've been meaning to get around to this...

Lil' Buddy (Mid High Tier) - I would rank this one God Tier for Belson getting sacked alone... but the rest of the episode just - doesn't match up that all that well for me (there are worse things Clarence could have been mad at then just missing one recess period; sad as that sounds, something just felt OOC for me here with him.). All it felt like to me was Clarence holding a tantrum for too long after awhile. He was clearly just mad that he missed recess, and I'm sure we've all been there, but at the same time, seeing him go all emo like that was just... Unsettling. The ending did make up for it, but just how much is anyone's guess.

Tuckered Boys (God Tier) - Definitely the best of the premieres; whomever worked on this actually took full advantage of the concept of the boys staying up late and having their imaginations run wild and ran with it, perfectly. I do like how despite all that, they did get to see the meteor shower as well. Any other show would have ended of a much more sour note, but thankfully (as I've been shown time and again, of course!) this ain't like any other show, at least in my honest opinion.

Water Park (High Tier) - Definitely the 2nd best of the premieres, mainly because it's not as God Tier as it could have been, IMHO. I felt it pretty predictable that this water park would be a sucky place and the only thing of note there would be the clearly dangerous water slide. Overall, a little too predictable for my tastes. Everything else about this episode, without going too much into detail, was spot on, and what I've come to expect by now of Clarence, when it's actually at it's best. That, and even though Clarence was obsessing over something dumb like a mascot's costume, it was actually hilarious and entertaining enough to sit back and watch legit, all the way to the end, save for Josh getting hurt (that guy really should leave town - or should have before he just about killed himself here, that is!).

Where the Wild Chads Are (Mid High Tier) - While what Clarence did was pretty dumb like that throughout the camping trip, he did pay for it in the end with almost getting injured... And through doing so, learning that Chad is a better person than what his lazier side did show off, earlier on in the episode, if not the whole show so far. Chad doesn't seem like the adventurous type, so of course he wasn't going to go pure camping like that, like Clarence wanted...

Chalmers Santiago (Mid Tier) - This episode just ticked me off, unfortunately. Save for a nice reference to Atari games and all, seeing Belson mess with Clarence like that just made me angry. Just one more reason I wish Clarence held on to some of his hatred from his episode with Lil' Buddy - if only to direct it at someone who deserves it, whenever necessary!

Yeah, that short was creepy as all get-out, and it only adds possibility that that kid Percy brought over might be an empty shell whose only form of movement is psychic powers.

Makes perfect sense.

I'll admit that this latest episode, Breehn Ho!" started out slow with Breehn not being good at the game being played at first.

Once he got his balls in check, however - High Tier episode, all the way to the end.

And this is me putting it lightly. Everything just seemed to click together once Breehn got more proactive with that game.
