Rediscovered Tiny Toon Adventures ^^ I only saw one episode as a kid; it was the one where Buster and I think Babs shrunk down to get rid of Furrball's fleas. I also saw the tail end of the Sea Monkeys episode with Elmyra.

I remember liking it :D

Who's your favorite character? I like Furrball because he's a cat and unlucky which makes me want to hug him (but not squeeze him like Elmyra :P) ^^ I haven't seen enough of it yet to form an opinion about the others.

Buster and Babs Bunny (no relation.) also, the Hub has been airing episodes of the show recently, so you can catch it there.

Have to love Hamton and his neuroses.

The thing i love about the reruns on The Hub are that they restored the MTV and VH 1 episodes to the lineup. I feared copyright issues would leave those dead in the dust, but apparently not.

[up] I was at the time, and still am for that matter, surprised that Julie Bruin made it to air in the MTV episode considering how...um...bouncy she is.

I can recite the theme from memory, and can remember the animation from it by frame. It left a huge impact on my work.

When I was a kid, I didn't "get" Tiny Toon Adventures. I thought it was just a cheap knockoff of Looney Tunes. They even had Bugs in the title sequence! I think I only watched it for a month or two, tops. Even less time than I gave Animaniacs.

But much, much later, I saw Season 1 Volume 1 of TTA on sale at f.y.e. and bought it. I marathoned the whole thing and despite a few weak episodes early on, I mostly enjoyed what I saw.

It's kinda odd how the episodes with the best animation (mostly Tokyo Movie Shinsha's) also tended to be the ones with the best writing, while in Animaniacs it was more of a mixed bag, and you'd get bad stories with great animation just as often as the opposite, or all around bad or good episodes.

It introduced me to They Might Be Giants. That alone is praiseworthy.

One of the things I've always liked about Tiny Toons that I felt gave it's best episodes a leg-up on Animaniacs was how versatile the characters were. They all had their gags - usually copied over from Looney Tunes - but then the show would turn around and use them in very different contexts, and we got some pretty interesting shorts and episodes as a result.

As awesome as Animaniacs was, one of the things that bugged me more about it as I got older was how several of the shorts were basically one joke repeated over and over, which worked pretty well when the joke was the kind that would work over and over again - especially if they spiced up that formula with something outside-the-box every once in a while (Slappy ftw) - but the idea didn't always pan out (I love ya, Chicken Boo, but if you've seen one short you've seen 'em all).

In general, I feel like the average episode of Animaniacs was better than the average episode of Tiny Toons, but the best Tiny Toons episodes were phenomenal.

Not that the two shows have to be in competition in any way, of course. They just make a nice comparison.

The use of Tokyo Movie Shinsa for most of their best scripts was NOT an accident. They weren't the only ones to do that, either (The Galaxy Rangers was famous for doing it, as did F Ox's Peter Pan and the Pirates). Frequently, producers of shows that farmed out their animation chores to multiple overseas studions would try to pair up what they felt were their best episodes with their best animation options (the better studios were more expensive, natch). I think the Animaniacs just had a better percentage of really good scripts overall.

[up] I think those episodes spoke for themselves grin

I find it interesting that the TMS animation is, while great, frequently off model. Star Toons, a Chicago based animation company and tied with TMS for my favorite animators of Tiny Toons (and Animaniacs too, for that matter) was much more consistently faithful to the characters' original designs.

I think Startoons worked best in Animaniacs. Didn't they do most of Hysteria! as well?

Did Furrball ever get happy endings?

If not I may have to write one for him :<

He gets a few - plus some where he doesn't really get better but is still happy. Off the top of my head, there's the flea one.

He gets to eat Sweetie once, even if it was by accident.

He ends up okay in the Star Trek parody, where he played Bones Mc Coy.
