The thought of this Bruce as a camp superhero trying to drag an exasperated Selina all over Gotham while calling her "chum" and expecting her to make puns is wonderful.

Of course, it ends with her and Alfred ambushing him and carting him off to Arkham, flagrant corruption be damned.

Seriously though, Origins Batman would probably be the best fit personality-wise.

Still not 100% sold on all the villains putting in appearances.

The selling point of superheroes is that extraordinary criminals require extraordinary heroes to deal with them.

If Jim Gordon can make his career beating all of the Rogues Gallery as a normal cop fighting the bad guys and doesn't-afraid-of-anything-ing, what need is there for the Batman?

Because Gordon isn't beating them. He's indirectly responsible for their existance. He didn't kill Cobblepot, he was the impetus of Nygma's first intentional violent crime, he saved the monsters of Indian Hill.....

Gotham Executive Producer Believes Superheroes Do Not Work On Television

While appearing at the Edinburgh Television Festival yesterday, Gotham executive producer Bruno Heller offered an opinion that may be considered unpopular around these parts: superheroes do not work on television.

“Probably because of the costume thing,” he continued, according to The Hollywood Reporter (via Heroic Hollywood). In explaining his choice to focus his Batman prequel on Detective Jim Gordon, he described the medium as being one of “real people and faces, and not so much about magic and the supernatural things.”

I’m sure more than a dozen long running and/or critically lauded genre shows come to your mind to refute The Mentalist creator’s claim.

In continuing to balance the show’s various natures as “a crime procedural and a mythic, epic, grand comic book saga,” Heller admitted he must keep it “keep it real and unreal at the same time.” He also said he must offer Easter eggs to what he called “the real cognoscenti” — the Batman fans in the audience — while keeping the show open to those not as well versed in the mythos.

While Heller produced the phenomenal Rome, I’m inclined to disagree with him in regards to superheroes working on television. The Flash proves that not only do costumes work, but some of the most outlandish things from comics — multiple Earths, talking gorillas, the ability to hear when moving at supersonic speeds — can also be made to function well on a weekly series.

Does it require a suspension of disbelief? Certainly. But is that requirement any greater than the notion that a team of criminal detection specialists can crack a case in seemingly a couple of days?

Admittedly, it is easier to produce a show without superhero costumes or supernatural happenings, but to dismiss those things as incompatible with television is a serious misread of what the medium can do. And even in the most special-effects-heavy and fantastical programs, the characters — the real people and faces — are the real draw. Just ask anyone who stuck with Supergirl.

I’m sure Heller will clarify his statements before too long, though. And as Gotham continues to be successful, he will eventually have to face a time when he can no longer avoid costumes on the show. It will be interesting to see how his opinion changes. Well, provided he is still involved when that day comes.

What bunk. If his opinion was related to properly displaying their abilities on a television budget I'd understand the comment. As it stand, the EP just looks weird for okaying supervillains on his show.

He also says that TV is about real people and not magical or supernatural stuff, and the comments section is more than happy to prove that wrong.

Of course. That reminds me of a short-lived series about 10 years ago about a pair of brothers who drive around the country in an old Chevy Impala fighting supernatural creatures. I forget the name of the show, but it was so unpopular it was cancelled after one season. There was this other show about an alien kid who somehow looks human, crash landed in a Kansas cornfield and grew up in a small town into a man with super powers. Again, it was universally hated for having such a preposterous premise and was quickly cancelled.

What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly.

Its another one of those pretentious "what really works in this medium is real things, not all that silly fantastical stuff that can't actually work" diatribes from directors who think they're artists and that they're bringing a "deeper" vision to the things they're adapting. You get those in films too, though not so much now as superheroes are working these days. IIRC Trank said stuff like that about Fantastic Four, and a lot of the stuff Goyer says have that connotation too.

The ridiculousness of saying that now when you've got a whole list of reasonably successful superhero series running as we speak is the most baffling thing.
