Maybe it's already a trope, but when I first started reading this thread, what really made the Scavenging Mechanic not feel like Chairs to me, is the Willing Suspension of Disbelief aspect of it.
Sure, the examples on the sandbox are pretty well justified, but when I think of "picking up most of your gear as you go through the game", I think of (especially) old school shooters where you'd just find spinning guns and ammo laying about in enemy bases in places convenient for the hero, but completely nonsensically in-universe.
In those cases, it's obviously a gameplay mechanic that would make no sense in the story and would be ignored in any sort of true canon, but generally makes the game more fun and less frustrating.

Yes, we already have that one. Blatant Item Placement.
As a matter of fact, we also already have a trope for the hero being sent on a mission without the resources needed to complete it.
And Picking Up Items is still chairs.
Was just looking at the examples and the wicks, and it's not looking good. Only 4 of the wicked worked aren't listed, and among those works listed (5), only Metal Gear series has it wicked. I don't think that's healthy.
As for the suggested split, is there an update to it? I haven't heard anything from it yet. And judging by the lack of wicks/examples currently there, the two may take a bit to flesh out with gathering anything missing from both sides.
