... Was that the opossum ring-eye-thing?

Um, what's going on? I'm only on page 16 and...
- blink blink*
Going on where?
Around and before page 16 of first chapter you've been learning about widespread racism and that it doesn't apply to everybody.
If you randomly saw the most recent page, it's magical CIA spooks going on about their magical CIA spook-business.

What was all that magical stuff before the racism though? And that door?
Worldbuilding.
Also establishing that Poppy is really really strong.
I couldn't figure out what was gated from what though. It just came the fuck out of nowhere.
It was a gate leading into the town. That eggy thing at the middle right in the far distance. That's the Eggton.
And I'm supposed to know that how?!
Just looking at it?
I mean. It's blatantly obvious that she was knocking on the gate into a town. And then in all the shots afterwards you see that there's no horizon, just dark blueness. And it's called friggin Eggton.

So a tiny microscopic detail in the background of that establishing shot with the tree is supposed to be your only clue?
ETA: what makes it obvious from page 7 through 9 that Eggton is a town?

No it's just a detail.
You main clue for it being a gate into a town is that after passing a gate she is in a town.
I'm still confused. Over everything
ETA:
What I understood
- Possums exist, and are hated because something.
- The universe is in a pouch.
What I didn't understand
- Everything else
Some aspects of it get revealed as you get further along. Others are either unexplained or the explanations came via Twitter or blog posts. More or less, the majority of the comic boils down to "Possums are seen as second-class citizens due to their lack of magic in a world where magic is common and most people can do it to some degree". And the world where this is set has a lot of details that are not explicitly explained, but may be explaned in time. After that, it's basically a matter of whether you care for the characters.
Possums are also anti-magic, and thus can't use a portion of magic-based conveniences of society. Such as portals. Or a big portion of healthcare.

{nods} An explanation from the wiki:
When the other Gods decided to remove the free will of mortals, Didelphi spoke against them. She tried time and time again to convince them to reconsider, but each time they said no. She knew that she could not best all her siblings in a straight fight, so she did something that none of them could have imagined. She went to the Tree of Life of the Opossum and tore it open. She then drained all the magic from the tree, cutting off Opossums from the magic of the gods be it good or bad. She used her new strength to push all the other gods to the edges of creation. She then opened her great, and totally not gross, pouch and pulled the whole universe inside. Inside her pouch the freedom of mortals was protected and she continues to fight off the rest of her siblings without rest. Without the guidance of the gods, mortals fell into chaos. In the end since they could not blame the goddess directly, they took out that hostility on Opossums ever since.
The wiki also has an entry explaining the lack of magic of Opossums. I haven't used the wiki enough to know whether it provides a danger of spoilers, but there's a good chance that's the case.
Who are all these people starting on page 18? What is even going on? Why am I having so much trouble with a freaking furry webcomic?!
This page 18? Well, we have Poppy, the main character, Valente, a bird gangster, Petunia Quibble, cat daughter and assistant to the mayor, and Hallia Haha, canary and former assistant to the mayor who still sticks around as a sort of junior assistant.
:) As to why you're having difficulty, I can't say for sure. One of the people on the was named and the other three are on the cast page.
Wait, who what what? Where am I? *backtracks to page 10*
Not really, just government spooks being government spooks.
Seal is just random. And that's not a human, that's a monkey.
