Reading tropes such as You Know What You Did

A story I've been thinking about for nearly a decade now is of a young boy whose parents died on 9/11, and how he was too young to understand what was happening at the time but now that he is older is coping with the event itself, the loss of his parents, living with his new family (I have either the sort of mother Jack Bauer would have had and when she thought she wasn't a fit mother she gives up her adopted son to The Paragon, or Danny Trejo and Michelle Rodreguiz as parents,) as well as coming to terms with the aspect of terrorism and those who killed his mother and father and the numerous conspiracy theories that abound about it, how he would react to suggestions the government murdered his real family and how his adopted one would help him through it.

Good idea? Bad idea? Ideas that could be written into the story? What works and what doesn't?
