Over 300,000 defy protest ban in Ukraine- "Fierce clashes erupt after protesters take to streets again, chanting "revolution" as anger against government grows."
What started as a protest against the decision not to sign an agreement with the EU seems to have escalated into a "Color Revolution" or "Arab Spring" style movement to force the government to resign. By some reports, the police are using violent tactics to suppress the street protests.
The Western half of the Ukraine has historically felt closer to Europe , and wants to move Ukrainian society in that direction. Eastern Ukraine feels culturally closer to Russia, and favors closer relations with that country. The current regime of President Viktor Yanukovich is part of that camp. The current confrontations can be seen as a clash between these two halves of Ukrainian society.

This thread was originally opened in 2013 during the beginning of the revolt in Ukraine that eventually over-threw the dictatorship of the Yanukovyich regime and instituted democratic elections soon afterward. As of this writing, in the aftermath of the Russian invasion that began on 2/23, it is not clear whether or for how long Ukraine will continue to exist as an independent country.
Statements made nine years ago still seem relevant: "The Western half of the Ukraine has historically felt closer to Europe , and wants to move Ukrainian society in that direction. Eastern Ukraine feels culturally closer to Russia, and favors closer relations with that country... The current confrontations can be seen as a clash between these two halves of Ukrainian society." Some people have expressed the view that the confrontation between Russia and Ukraine, beginning in 2014, never really ended.
The invasion is also a result of certain grievances proclaimed by Vladimir Putin, the current President of Russia, and used by him as justification for armed attack and occupation. Western governments, and others around the world, have joined together in condemnation of this attack.
While we do not know what the ultimate outcome of these events will be, this thread will continue to be made available as a place to record news, ask questions and express opinions about the "Crisis in Ukraine."

Another issue is that the US Congress' Ukraine aid bill is tied to military aid to Israel, which the left wing of House Democrats aren't going to vote for as a matter of principle.
I mean many in maga right also dosent vote on Ukraine on principle because they decry ukraineas corrupt, that russia maybe have valid point or that is not US buissness and russia and Ukraine should be let to dry.

in a way the israel-hamas conflict was a terrible blow: it allow republican to tie down suport for ukraine into this stalemet, Biden who was getting suport for his view against Russia is getting the burn for his near total suport for Israel regardless of what Israel does.

Really the failures of the West in regards to Ukraine are far greater than simply pinning the blame on 5th columnists.
There were a bunch of mistaken beliefs about Russia's resolve, intentions, and their own willingness to keep going beyond reason.
There was also the prediction that the course of the war could be predicted and that there wouldn't be black swan events like Israel to mess it up.
I know some people argued in other places that NATO's strategy was a boiling the frog strategy in regards to escalation of support, but they took too long to boil and they failed to take into account of the possibility that someone siding with the frog would just walk in and turn the stove off.
There was also the fact that ultimately the West couldn't decide exactly what their strategy was for Ukraine. They wanted Ukraine to win but they didn't want Russia to collapse even though that's the only real way for Ukraine to win for good. There was a mistaken belief that Putin would see reason and stop, and a complete misunderstanding of what kind of person Putin is.

There was a bunch of issues here.
Once is that while NATO machine can outpace Russia, it would take a while before they were ready and in a way a lot of people have complain NATO took way to long and their bottlenecks while Russia shift to a army.
Another issue is not just the idea Russia will continue fighting but that their goverment could just shurg most of the casualties with kinda ease, like outside of some protest, Russia goverment have manage more or less conduct a war with their population mostly shurging and going with it and is very clear that a shake up in Russia will not come from the people but the real power broker and outside of Prighozin, that is unlike it.
Also the west not alloing Ukriane to hit the oil field was a mistake since it does hurt Russia, I think another issue there is a perception Russia will not adapt and try to counter the method like evading santions for example.

I'd like to think that Iran's minutes-ago attack on Israel will finally get Congress to pass a combined Israel-Ukraine aid package. Republicans won't be happy because it would help their sugar daddy's opponent, Democrats won't be happy because it would support a war criminal, but they'll both get something they want. And hey, if Iran is throwing drones at Israeli AA systems, that's less war material they're sending to Russia for use in Ukraine!

Summary of what's happening so far from Chris (Ukrainian Canadian):
In short, he's pessimistic on what's happening in the US (Republicans and the upcoming elections), Germany (some hesitation on getting Taurus missiles to Ukraine) and Poland (grains and border stuff).
He also touched on suggestions that Ukraine doesn't like being told to stop targeting Russian refineries.
Chris does mention the Dragon Fire laser system. And there's (supposed) talks of providing it to the Ukrainian military.
