Clashes amid huge Ukraine protest against U-turn on EU

Over 300,000 defy protest ban in Ukraine- "Fierce clashes erupt after protesters take to streets again, chanting "revolution" as anger against government grows."

What started as a protest against the decision not to sign an agreement with the EU seems to have escalated into a "Color Revolution" or "Arab Spring" style movement to force the government to resign. By some reports, the police are using violent tactics to suppress the street protests.

The Western half of the Ukraine has historically felt closer to Europe , and wants to move Ukrainian society in that direction. Eastern Ukraine feels culturally closer to Russia, and favors closer relations with that country. The current regime of President Viktor Yanukovich is part of that camp. The current confrontations can be seen as a clash between these two halves of Ukrainian society.

EDIT (2/24/2022)

This thread was originally opened in 2013 during the beginning of the revolt in Ukraine that eventually over-threw the dictatorship of the Yanukovyich regime and instituted democratic elections soon afterward. As of this writing, in the aftermath of the Russian invasion that began on 2/23, it is not clear whether or for how long Ukraine will continue to exist as an independent country.

Statements made nine years ago still seem relevant: "The Western half of the Ukraine has historically felt closer to Europe , and wants to move Ukrainian society in that direction. Eastern Ukraine feels culturally closer to Russia, and favors closer relations with that country... The current confrontations can be seen as a clash between these two halves of Ukrainian society." Some people have expressed the view that the confrontation between Russia and Ukraine, beginning in 2014, never really ended.

The invasion is also a result of certain grievances proclaimed by Vladimir Putin, the current President of Russia, and used by him as justification for armed attack and occupation. Western governments, and others around the world, have joined together in condemnation of this attack.

While we do not know what the ultimate outcome of these events will be, this thread will continue to be made available as a place to record news, ask questions and express opinions about the "Crisis in Ukraine."

This map will help track the latest developments.

Do not post anything about the Ukrainian military movement and strategy. This could actually result in casualties.

No discussion regarding nuclear war. As nuclear weapons are not being used by either side, nuclear war is off-topic.

Looks like there is a large barrage of missiles coming in from Russia, with attacks reported from Dnipro, Kharkiv and elsewhere ([1]). At the same time, US has urged Ukraine to halt strikes on Russian oil refineries: Washington told Kyiv that drone attacks risk driving up crude prices and provoking retaliation and Russia says it is pushing Ukrainian forces back, will create two new armies

Didn't Russia deny hitting a dam last year? Guess they stopped caring about appearances after Ukraine hit the only thing they care about — their oil.

[up][up][up] I feel a bit inclined to criticize US decision to tell Ukrainians to halt attacks on refineries. How else Ukrainians are suppose to slow down or even stop Russian advances if they can’t attack the infrastructure that keeps Russian war machine and economy going? Especially considering other news you mentioned with Russians claiming they are making progress and plan to bring even more forces? Putin showed time and time again that he does not care how many of his countrymen and random people die as long as he gets his way, nor does he care he will plunge his country into economic hole and turn his country into a client state dependant on China’s continuous support. The only way to stop him is to take away his tools to wage war with. And, without fuel provided by these refineries, he won’t be able to wage war as he wants to.

And tbh, the fear of greater retaliation? It's a bit late for that since Russia's already invading Ukraine and bombing their civilians anyway.

At least they also admitted that they're worried about rising oil prices. It's a rather self-centered reason, but at least they're not hiding it's a reason.

How exactly destroying facilities that consume crude oil can drive the prices for crude oil up is beyond me.

In all seriousness, there's probably no putting the mushroom cloud back in the uranium shell.

Stocks are a scam — the guy who started NASDAQ, Bernie Madoff, said as much. And he would know a thing or two about scams for obvious reasons. But they're a scam that's too entrenched in the global economy.

The Ukrainian government has asserted that this claim is false[1], I’m not aware of any public US government statement on the story and have seen claims online that the FT article doesn’t actually quote any sources within the government, jsut assertions from people outside the US government.

[up][up] Yes, not de jure war, but they are willing to call it de facto war. Which is a difference from insisting on calling it "special military operation". Also, when you say something elaborate. Do not just "not really" with no details. It is insulting.
