Screwy Squirrel is the name of a work. However, despite the name and the picture, the page itself refers not to the Screwy Squirrel cartoons but rather to a character archetype.

Because of this, there was a post a while backwhere everyone was in agreement that Screwy Squirrel should be renamed. There was a list of potential renames and everything. Then one day, for whatever reason, people just stopped posting and the discussion expired.

I suggest resurrecting the discussion and finishing the job.

Suggestions from the thread included...

  • Screwy
  • The Screwball
  • Screwball Cartoon
  • Heckler
  • Practical Jokester
  • Psychotic Practical Jokester
  • Hair Trigger Trickster
  • Sadistic Trickster
  • Trolling Trickster

Hmmm ... legit points, but lately we have moved away a bit from considering "Shares its name with a work" as a trope rename argument, especially when the number of wicks and inbounds is not trivial.

[up] I'd agree if that were the only issue with it, but because of the name the trope name is fairly obtuse. Upon seeing it, my first guess is that it would be about squirrels being used for comedy (like it was Everythings Screwier With Squirrels).

EDIT: In fact, looking further I see that we have that trope, it's Nutty Squirrel. I always find it worrisome when two different tropes have names that are effectively synonyms but different meanings.

EDIT 2: Clicking through related examples at random, misuse doesn't seem bad. A couple examples seem better suited for The Gadfly, and I found one example that should've been a link to the work itself and not the trope. So it didn't look that bad. But a formal wick check should probably be done.

This doesn't just share its name with a work - it's named after a character. A relatively obscure character - I don't know if that makes it better or worse. The trope has nothing to do with squirrels. We can come up with a better name.

It seems like Jokester and Trickster are the two most popular rename choices. Perhaps a combination might be appropriate. For instance, the Joking Trickster?

We already have The Trickster.

If someone can demonstrate that this trope is being misused, especially that it is being mistaken with Nutty Squirrel, I would support rename. Otherwise, I see no pressing need.
