Gundam the End is actually pretty cool. Least Broken Gunpla in the entirety of the Gunpla Academy.

A Gunpla that can bite the heads off of other gunpla, shoot fangs, swallow a beam attack with it's mouth hands and just all around cause general trouble is the least broken.

The whole "gunplay is fun" is silly considering they were at what? Top 8 World championships? At that point you're more concerned about winning than having fun if you're really competitive. I hate that kind of message when its not appropriate for the setting.

If they were playing around doing casual gunplay matches then there's a point.

Speaking of Meijin, am I the only one who wants to see Exia Dark Matter again?
If it doesn't make sense narrative-wise, I don't think they should bring the Dark Matter back. That aside, I'll agree that it was one of the cooler custom jobs in the first series, and a good example of the 'make it your own' philosophy that the series was trying to push: it turned a predominantly heroic-looking mobile suit into one of the more sinister designs in the franchise.

I'm kind of disappointed that we haven't seen the reverse done all that often; the only ones I can really think of are Aila's Miss Sazabi and China/Mirai's respective Beargguys (though given that they're more based on the Beargguy from Gunpla Builders, which was modded by a protagonist character, rather than the original Acguy, they might not count). I want to see someone try to make, say, the Zeong look heroic, damnit! tongue

A heroic Zeong? I'm okay with that, as long as they don't put legs on it. The Perfect Zeong is weird looking.

Ep 24.

Huh, that was pretty quick for the final battle. Still, one of the better fights, although not as good as Tryon 3 fight.

Also, holy shit, it's Iori Sei!!!!!!!!!!

So in the end it was a 1v1 for everyone.

Adou's The End had a last trick up it's stomach, shia didn't do much considering her hype.

The final battle with the OP song is always something I enjoy. grin

You know what. It started out with Yuuma in the Mejin Cup. It makes sense to end it that way.

Weird how the Breather caps off the series. I was gonna wait til the very end to weigh in but I think now is appropriate.

Try overall is weaker then it's predecessor but it is still a god series. Just like last season the characters bring different skills to the table. When combined they are the sum of their parts and havin' the focus of the show switch to 3 member teams with each member pilotin' their own Gunpla was a good call. It gave the fights a lot of variety without havin' to rely on the gimmick matches of last season. Even so the unresolved (as of now anyways) romantic subplot, simpler characters and shallower message make this season not as strong as last. It has the same flavour, and with the ferocity of the fights a bit more spice, but the sauce isn't quite there. Still a good show overall with some very cool and creative Gunpla designs (Tryon 3 is my new Mechfu). Plus the fact it was free is a huge upside. Fumina is best girl, there is no arguin' this. She has the Charlie Sheen Gundam, she was white tiger blood runnin' her veins (and a great pair of personalities).

Now all that's left is for Sunrise to make a Tryon 3 show. Then I can die happily.

How about a Tryon 3 vs Snibal Drago OVA (like last season's chibi specials). Still I think this season would have been better if Yuuma was the protagonist, I enjoyed his fights more than Sekai's.

The final battle was a mixed bag for me. On the one hand, parts of it were great, like Yuuma and Fumina actually working together, covering each other and exchanging weapons and the like. On the other hand, most of the fight wasn't, repeatedly relying on fighters appearing out of nowhere from off-screen to save one of their teammates, only to go back to fighting their designated foe. (This is most blatant when Wilfred rescues Shia from Fumina at about the 8 minute mark. Did Sekai decide to let him take a break and travel halfway across the colony without attacking for no apparent reason?) The End is made entirely of plothax with an apparently infinite supply of fangs, while the wrist injury turns out to be a complete red herring that affects nothing in the battle (though admittedly, that's better than having it turn out to be a Game-Breaking Injury that loses Adou the match) and was basically pointless except for wasting screen time. Shia added nothing much to the battle except barriers and some repairs to The End.

The draw due to time running out was clever and well-executing, and Try Burning being kitbashed back together from all three of their machines worked better than expected. (I saw the Franken-Try design online before the episode was posted and thought it was some hideous attempt at a Tryon 3 style combination, but it works much better as an emergency repair job.) The tiebreaker fight itself was pretty dull, no choreography to it, just a light show and ever larger explosions so that we know how zomg powerful they are. It's slightly better than telling us what the scouter says about their power level, but only slightly. And then Sekai wins for no apparent reason despite everything up to that point being entirely evenly matched. (The tiebreaker fight in general made me think of Professor Farnsworth reminding us that perfectly symmetrical violence never solves anything.)

Random other thoughts: what the hell is with them playing the standard Gundam death tropes (like "fading into light as you eat a beam blast bigger than your entire mecha" and "sharing a Newtype connection with your killer at the exact moment of your death") entirely straight? It's a goddamn game, people, remember? We don't need a shot of the fighter doing a death scene as their gunpla is destroyed, because the fighter isn't dying even if their mecha is vaporized. Oh, and Winning Gundam is powered by determination, tears, and plothax, apparently. So is Try Burning, but that's nothing new — he pulled more new techniques out of nowhere, but that was hardly unexpected at this point. How the hell Junya's four-fisted punch translates to "sword of fire", though, I have no goddamn idea.

And there's one episode left. Which is about Yuuma competing in the Meijin Cup? Uh, okay. Probably not the best use of your available screen time, GBF Try, but I'll withhold judgment until I actually see it, I guess.

Overall, I tend to agree with [up] that Sekai made for a weak main character, but I would have rather seen Fumina step up as the primary protagonist than Yuuma. I actually thought that she was going to, given her position as head of the school' gunpla battle club and her prominence in the OP/ED animations. It would've been easy — and, I think, more interesting that what we actually got — to have the series focus on her struggling to come into her own as a leader and guide her team to victory. There were hints of it, but it never really materialized, which was unfortunate.

[up]"Probably not the best use of your available screen time, GBF Try,"

The last few episodes mostly had Gunpla we'd already seen a bunch before, so they're going to use their last episode to showcase a bunch of Gunpla designs so Bandai has more model kits to sell.

Your thoughts mirror mine on the episode, for the most part. I actually liked the fire sword though: it may have come out of nowhere, but it gives Try Burning something else to do besides punch things and throw phoenixes.

I know GBF did the whole "ACT LIKE WE ARE REALLY IN A GUNDAM" thing a few times, but did the director of Try actually forget? Like holy crap people, calm down, you're not fading into a burst of light.

[up][up]

/m/ had a believable theory that Fumina was meant to be the protagonist but higher ups at Sunrise went "NO NO KIDS WONT ACCEPT THAT, GET A HOTBLOODED SHONEN PROTAGONIST!"
