I can't help but feel we've gone a little off-track.
So, great fairy of what, exactly? The named fairies get specific roles: Cirno is an ice fairy, the Three Fairies of Light are... yeah, Lily White is the herald of spring, etc. The nameless cannon fodder fairies are presumably unspecialized, local nature spirits or something. So where does Daiyousei stand between these two extremes?
Bocaj floated the idea of her being a fairy of mists due to teleporting, but I dunno, she doesn't seem to have the character design to match that. We could try to pin her down as the Great Fairy of the Misty Lake, but again, it just doesn't seem to match her either. So looking at her character design, what does Daiyousei appear to be the great fairy of?
I don't know that great fairies are any special thing.
I'd even say that all the named fairies are great fairies. Daiyousei happens to be on their level except without a name.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersMaybe Dai's the long lost Fairy of Summer. Yes, The Four Seasonal Fairies of the Apocalypse is almost realized! Mwahahahaha....!
Now, where is the Fairy of Autumn?

Considering her wings would likely be drying leaves...
Dead for good?
I'm personally of the opinion that "greater fairy" would encompass the meaning of her name better. (also "lesser devil" for Koakuma). She's more than your average fairy, but your average fairy dies in one hit, so... That said, if she were in any game after EOSD I'm sure she would have gotten a name like Tewi or Momiji did. I would imagine she's a lake fairy because she showed up at the lake. Impressive deduction, I know.
I guess "greater fairy" is a little better than "midboss fairy" as a classification. Though the same logic does back up Cirno's claims of being the greatest fairy, not that I necessarily disagree with it.
Something I noticed on the Wiki, her EoSD sprite◊ seems to give her feathered wings, which is mind-blowing considering how often she's depicted with vaguely buggy wings instead. And then her Fairy Wars sprite◊ barely gives an impression of wings beyond the gold bit at the top. Almost enough to make you wonder if it's the same Greater Fairy.
Also wonder why ZUN never gave her a proper name after the fans latched on to her. Did he want to make sure we were seeing the same greater fairy? Even if they don't look quite the same.
Daiyousei is the only sanre fairy comparted to cinro which is actually saying a lot...
"Eratoeir is a Gangsta."Now that you mention it, all the Daiyouseis we've seen might not be the same Daiyousei. Eo SD Daiyousei, FW Daiyousei, OSP hide-and-seek Daiyousei, etc all could be different ones.
And don't ever let them hear you say they all look alike.
Trying to decide which spin on the character I like more. First view is that Daiyousei is not merely a midboss, but the one that organizes all the mobs of fairies mowed down during times of excitement in Gensokyo. She performs the vital role of spacing out the fairies so they are neither too overwhelming or easy, and to ensure that the incident resolvers have just enough powerups to put up a good fight.
Second view is that Daiyousei is an Incident Resolver. When the balance of nature is out of whack - a scarlet mist, a late spring, an unnatural moon - she ventures forth to get to the bottom of things, and is promptly blown out of the sky by the protagonists. If only they bothered to talk to fairies before blasting them, they might make a powerful...ish, ally.
An interesting thing about Daiyousei, is that she's capable of midbossery. Also (on the actual alternate character interpretation side of things) she sees the hierarchy to go Cirno > Daiyousei > other fairies = Nitori = Kappa > Humans. Thanks to her infallible logic* she truly believes Cirno to be the strongest. (Don't ask where the other youkai are on that list). Now for the question, "What is she fairy of?" The answer is in fact, as others have guessed, the mist that gives Mist Lake its name. "Why is this significant?" I don't hear you ask. Well it's because the mist is formed thanks to Cirno's freezing cold presence, and since the mist is formed because of Cirno, and Daiyousei came from the mist, this means that technically Daiyousei is Cirno's daughter. Now I have yet to figure out exactly what Dai's powers are and how they work, bet when I do, I'll let you know.

Well that's a relationship between the two of them I don't think I've ever encountered before. Intriguing.
Also, it's almost Lovecraftian. We have this impossibly powerful entity (by fairy standards) that is nevertheless not very intelligent (by our standards), inadvertently spawning life as it blindly rampages through the material universe. Ia! Ia! Sur-Cul Nein! The blue brat with one known young!
Daiyousei picdive was disappointing. Most of her higest-rated appearances are in group shots, and as for the rest, there were a lot of pantyshots and depictions of her with a woman's breasts on a child's body. Kinda disturbing.

Oh right, I forgot.
Daiyousei is a fairy. She is great.
I like her design. Not bad for a minor voiceless character.
She carries around flowers sometimes. Cute.
....also, she throws kunai.
......I got nothing.
Don't PM me. We don't like being PMed.Next will be Yuki and Mai, the Human Village, and Lady Kanako Yasaka! But first, step lively, this isn't a pleasure cruise!
Stage: The Unfortunate Captain of the Holy Palanquin ~ Inside the Palanquin Ship
BGM: "Interdimensional Voyage of a Ghostly Passenger Ship"
Theme: "Captain Murasa"
Spellcard Motif: Shipwrecks and the Ghostly Consequences Thereof
Notable spellcards: UFO, DS
Capsize "Sinking Anchor," Drowning Sign "Deep Vortex," Harbor Sign "Eternally Anchored Ghost Ship," Ghost "Dipper Creeping Close," Flood "Venus of the Bilge," "Deep Sinker"
Write-up:
A ghost of a shipwreck victim who once existed to perpetuate similar tragedies, Minamitsu Murasa was found by Byakuren Hijiri and offered command of the very vessel she was bound to, which became the flying Palanquin Ship. Unfortunately after Byakuren was cast into Hokkai by her fellow humans, Murasa and her ship ended up re-bound in the Underground. After being inadvertently freed by a Moriya Shrine conspiracy so that she and Byakuren's other disciples could rescue their mentor, Murasa's ship was used to construct the Myouren Temple. And then it turned out that without her attachment to her ship, Murasa's urge to drown people returned, whoops.
Capsizing tendencies aside, the good captain is said to be bright and kind-hearted as well as a good conservationist, so her victims at least have pleasant company as they sink. But before this serial killer angle was revealed by Akyuu, Murasa was already popular as an anchor-flinging badass - her theme song is named after her, after all. And there's something to be said about a lady in uniform, especially if she's also a high-ranking officer.
Relations
- Byakuren Hijiri (rescuer, for better and for worse)
- Myouren Temple Crew (does she outrank them?)
See also the first two compendiums.

Murasa's costume interests me. Did she have it when she was alive? Did Byakuren give it to her? Or was she one day like "You know what I need? A sailor outfit". And then Murasa had the sailor outfit because she's a ghost.
The reason whys he carries an anchor is related to her death: she most likely drowned due of a shipwreck and wasn't able to escape due of being wrapped into a chain/rope connecting into the anchor.
Continue the bloodline, Fujimaru!Isn't it said somewehere that nowadays she's trying to avoid sinking ships that will harm people. So now she's sinking Komachi's boats instead. She's still far from freeing herself of the boat-drowning addiction, but she's making progress.
Also worth noting is that she's one of thew few non-Extra boss that has a timeout card. And unlike Aya's, hers last a full standard card duration. Which means all my rage when facing her,
Nope, SoPM explictly says that she is a drownaholic and will drown people.
I guess it helps that there isn't much boatage in Gensoukyou.
Anyway, Murasa....meh, she always seemed like the least interesting of the Myouran Temple crew to me. Even Ichirin caught more of my attention, and Ichirin is the one who's gimmick is how generic and forgettable she is.
I might do a proper post later.

Don't PM me. We don't like being PMed.Hmm. I'm not sure of what to say. She has one of my favorite themes, that's something at least...
Other than that, I don't have any particular thoughts on Murasa that I can extrapolate from.
Conception is sin Birth is pain Life is toil Death is inevitableMinamitsu Murasa:
A girl who drowned who is now under the employ of Byakuren. Loves sinking stuff. And people.
Darn her ship. I just can't seem to navigate that stage very well. All those bullets... On the rare occasions that I do get to the end, there she is, waiting to eagerly throw an anchor into my face. And I'm too darn tired to do anything!
She loves striking up conversations between herself and the people she's currently drowning. There is no difficulty in doing that. Captains have lots of stories to tell, after all. Huh, but the fact that they are going down with their ships while speaking to her mean they realize the futility of saving themselves?
That said, she and Komachi love speaking to their 'clientale', so they should totally be drinking buddies. When Murasa isn't busy trying to sink her ship(Wait, can Murasa shake off the gravitational pull of the Sanzu River?).
Stay clear of puddles. Even if they are shallow, she will have her drowning-things fix!
If Murasa were a Duelist, her deck would revolve around A Legendary Ocean, since I'm sure she knows a couple of legendary oceans.
Well, it won't let her swim, but she probably can't drown, so I guess she could walk across the bottom to get around, but that wouldn't let her reach boats, so... floaties? Inner tube?
And what's Murasa doing at the Sanzu? What, is she going to re-drown ghosts? Harass shinigami? And how can she operate if she's not allowed to cross the river?
Oh, that might explain it. But wait, isn't going overboard into the Sanzu a Very Bad Thing for a departed soul?
You could talk about why you like it, or what you think her theme song says about her character, and whether it fits with her later portrayal as a drownaholic.
