I had a really weird idea recently. Basically, taking elements from a story (Grettis saga) and fusing them with a Harry Potter type Wizarding School setting in a steampunk future world. The setting would be the same general one as my Norse saga plots.

Basically I would have a young hero who's not very likeable, doesn't have many friends, messes up everything he's given to do, and has super strength, fighting ability and magical powers. So our hero Grettir Gunnlaugson is sent off to a school in a longhouse where he's put through various trials and learns to control his abilities. It's mainly because I want something different than the typically likeable YA protagonist.

I like the idea, so thumbs up[tup]. You bring up a good point; many YA protagonists just have this...thing about them that makes people automatically like them (which is funny, because many of my protagonists are either loners or just people who are reviled for some reason or other). It's nice to see another writer who isn't using that either.

One question: Is his super-strength part of the standard skill set for magically gifted people in this setting? The way you phrased it sounded as if it was an ability set apart from others.

[up] Incredible strength can be a magical or non-magical ability. Basically it's a common magical ability but a person doesn't need to be magical to have it.
