Jane Jensen's "Mystery Game X" has at last been revealed, and it's a remake of Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, the first Gabriel Knight game.

Thus far the new backgrounds

The official website should be here; at time of writing it has screenshots, links and a (downloadable) theme music MP 3.

For myself, I'm rather excited: I'm quite a fan of the Gabriel Knight games (and indeed Jane Jensen's other similar games, Gray Matter and MÅ“bius), and I'm finding the new screenshots lovely.

I believe that the original voice-cast is not to return, more's the pity, but I'm quite willing to wait and to give the new cast a chance.

... I'll confess that I very much hope that this is a first step towards seeing a new entry in the Gabriel Knight series.

It looks good, but I don't see why it needed to be remade. The original still looks pretty decent.

Well, aside from the thought of jumping onto the remake bandwagon (see: Monkey Island), two thoughts occur to me:

- As much as I like pixels, I do think that I prefer the new look, and I can see it attracting a wider audience than the older graphics. For what it's worth, I could see myself taking the remake as my standard version for replays if it turns out well, as I did with the AGD remake of Quest for Glory II, I seem to recall.

- Compatibility: The original game is pretty old; this version is intended to run on Windows, Mac and iPad, I believe (and possibly Linux; I'm not sure). The version available through GOG is presumably compatible with modern versions of Windows, but even if it does so via a system that allows Linux and iOS (Dos Box, for example, if it runs on the iPad) I imagine that it will likely still be easier to get the new version up and running outside of Windows than the old version.

Ahh. Didn't see that they were making it for i0S as well. If nothing else, at least it will get people interested again, though I'll probably skip it unless there's some new content or it falls cheap.

So, a new trailer has been released:

I've been hopeful about this 20th Anniversary Edition, and I think that I'm more so now:

The music sounds excellent (as is to be expected, given that—if I recall correctly—Robert Holmes is once again directing it), the backdrops remain lovely, and I really like what I've heard of the voice-acting in this trailer. The graphic-novel cutscenes look great (I'm a fan of Phoenix Online's in this respect: I think that they have some very good 2D artists).

The 3D animations are a little tricky for me to judge in such short clips, but I think that they look better than I recall from Cognition; they're still perhaps the weakest element, but as far as I see, they look good enough.

Speaking—pun intended—of the voice acting, given the new actors the voices aren't as they were in the original. However, I do like them (more, I think, than I did the voice-acting in Gabriel Knight 2), and they sound right to me.

Overall: I'm excited for this! ^_^

I'm not sure that this is quite the right thread for this post: it's not related to GK 1, specifically, although it is related to the Gabriel Knight series. I considered the Chatterbox thread, but it felt a bit spammy to put it there...

That said, there's a campaign underway, on social media as well as change.org, calling for support in a call for the creation of a Gabriel Knight 4.

Aside from the series being a beloved one, I believe, Gabriel Knight 3 ended on quite a cliffhanger. As a result, I gather that there is quite a strong desire amongst some fans (myself included) for a fourth game.

There have been campaigns before now, to little avail; but still, with a petition to sign and social media to get word out, perhaps this one has at least some advantage. And, to me at least, it seems worth a try!

(And indeed, I have signed the petition myself.)

So far, the petition seems to be doing fairly well: it passed its previous goal of 1500 signatures (I think that it was), and is currently working its way towards 2500.

Should you want to sign up, the petition can be found here: https://www.change.org/p/activision-publishing-gabriel-knight-4-petition
