Why would you be overly wary of wikipedia? If you can't spot that something is obviously incorrect, your readers likely won't either. That's assuming that anything you look is incorrect.
If nothing else, you can look at the citations on the wiki page, they aren't editable.

By the 1820s there are no pirates.
More seriously the rules for pirates at the time are pretty draconian, being largely unchanged from the 1600s; if you're lucky they try and hang you, if you're not they just hang you.

Okay I'm doing a historical fiction story that involves a naval officer, his kid,and a pirate. I'm unsure of where to find a reliable source of information. I'm wary of wikipedia.
What would the routines be for a naval captain? How often would he spend at shore versus away. Should I make him a higher rank if I want him to have the means or authority to punish pirates?
