@JT: I'll proofread your fanfic for you. If you don't have it on Google Docs, I could PM you my email and you could send it directly to me to read.

On the other topic, I'd wonder if Equestria would have the same stigma against adult ponies living with their parents that the modern US does. I still live with my parents and don't plan to move out any time soon. Even if I were to get a full-time job that could support me (I currently have a part-time job), I would then want to use that to be a third working adult contributing to the family. Then again, I probably have an abnormally good relationship with my parents (who support my decision that at this point, I'd still like to live with them) and while I sometimes have small disagreements with them, those are usually resolved fairly easily. Reading about some of the issues other people on this thread have with their parents puts any annoyances in my relationship with them into perspective, and makes me feel even more grateful for them.

I also have unique issues with taking on several types of common entry-level jobs because of my Aspergers' and sound sensitivities that basically mean that I probably would not be able to do any form of customer service outside of talking to customers over email without the very real possibility of me getting upset at ambient noises and getting fired for that, or getting fired for not being able to be a Stepford Smiler which is something I'm not able to do (and am against doing on some moral level as well because of my honesty). My parents are aware of this and at this point, support me in finding a job that specifically fits my needs and abilities rather than expecting me to take just anything. It also helps that they're both big on worker's rights in general.

The only reason our parents and grand-parents moved out of their parents' homes so quickly was because they were fortunate enough to come of age in the best economy in recent history. Before that, I don't think were was any stigma for adults living with their parents.

I doubt ponies would have any problems with adult ponies living with their parents. They'd probably consider it admirable to be so close to your family, even.

The whole "you have to move out and get your own place to live" is kind of stupid. I personally want to move out, but that's because I can't stand living with my parents on a personal level. I want to live my own life and I feel like I can't do that here because they don't respect my decisions. I mean... I'm 21 and my mom has repeatedly threatened to cut off my internet access because I met a girl I like online. I'm an adult. It doesn't matter what if she approves. But it's her house and I'm her son so she feels she can control my relationships.

Applejack/Big Mac/Apple Bloom with Granny Smith is kind of the closest thing we get and nopony bats an eye. In fact, it seems to be generally treated as a positive thing, likely for the closeness reason mentioned above.

Ike: I know how stuff like that can get. It's not the exact situation, but I've been explicitly agnostic for a long time and when I was still at home, my mom insisted that I go to church with her. :/

I doubt they'd have that kind of stigma either. If anything the emphasis on community would result in it being more commonly accepted than in real life. Although it probably depends on where. It's probably more common in Ponyville than it would be in, say, Manehattan.

AJ is the only one who still lives in her family home but, having grown up in a fairly rural area myself, that's quite common for country people.

Yeah and even here that stigma is rapidly fading as more and more people are doing it simply because it's the only way to survive anymore.

I think it has something to do with the culture around the time of WWII; a lot of people ended up striking out on their own after the war, and it got ingrained in their children that that's what you're supposed to do, and that a failure to do so is the result of an inability to live on your own.

The short version is that at some point independence got identified as being really important, and living with parents is viewed as an inability to be independent.

I suppose large families from the baby boom generation had something to do with it.

Yeah, I didn't think that Equestria would have as much of a stigma at all for adult ponies living with their parents, given that society's emphasis on community and friendship, which would include family bonds as well. That and I like to imagine that it wouldn't because I don't like that stigma either. It really depends on the individual person's relationship with his or her family and also the family's general economic level.

I can state on personal experience of it possibly being more common in farm families, too. One of my aunts lives on a farm and she lives with her mother and her grandmother lived there too when she was alive, along with her husband (my biological uncle) and her two daughters (my cousins, obviously), so I have a positive example of a multigenerational family very close to me.

@storyyeller: That too, would be a complicating factor. It would be easier for an only child like me to stay with my parents through adulthood, rather than families like the 4 kid families both of my parents came from. Especially if you factor in the spouses and children of those adult "kids" too, some of them might have to move out or they would all need to get a gigantic house!

Of course we say this, but never discount a joke about a male who still lives with his mother. Those are always deemed funny and can appear regardless of if it makes sense.

For all this talk about Ponyville/Equestria supposedly subverting the stigma against young adults living with their parents, it sure has a lot of young adult main characters not living with their parents. tongue

I like to think Shining Armour was still living with his parents before he married Cadence, and his mum would pack the captain of the royal guard's lunch for him everyday.

Kyler: But it doesn't make a big deal of it, so I guess the living independently thing is kind of just... there.

Dalek: Yes! That is an adorable mental image.
