Talking about sitting and rotting away.

Has the ICC actually arrested someone instead of sending very stern letters condemning actions?

Because if you are going to trial someone you need to take them alive first, otherwise all those condemnations and sentences are merely symbolic.

The ICC has people relating to investigations in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Central African Republic and Ivory Coast in custody.

So far it's indicted 36 people, 9 are at large, 2 in the hands of local authorities, 3 dead, 2 convicted, 7 acquitted, 1 inadmissible, 3 on trial and 9 in pre-trial.

Its first investigation started in 2004 and this stuff takes time. It has other investigation and potential investigations ongoing but its not easy for the ICC to act, especially as it relies on the good will of the signed up nations to arrest and then hand over anyone they issue an arrest warrant for.

The ICC doesn't send stern letters, that's the UN, the ICC are the ones who are brought in when it's decided that it's time for people to be put in trail.

Edit: [down], Yep, fixed it now.

@amitakartok's post: Here's a report on Boko Haram's massacre of their own (forcibly married) wives in anticipation of dying. Yup, a new low for them, slightly. Or maybe not - the bar's already three inches into the ground.

http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2015/03/suicide-bomber-hits-mosques-yemen-capital-150320103444485.html

Suicide bombers have attacked two mosques in the Yemeni capital during the rush for Friday prayers, killing 90 people and injuring 280 others, sources have told Al Jazeera.

Three blasts were heard in two central mosques used by Houthi Shia Muslims, sources said.

A report on the Houthi-funded Al-Masirah TV channel said the bombers attacked the Badr and al-Hashoosh mosques during midday prayers on Friday.

According to witnesses, one of the suicide bombers detonated his explosives inside the Badr mosque, causing panic as dozens of worshippers rushed toward the outside gates.

A second bomber then attacked amid the panicked crowds trying to escape.

Yemen is deteriorating since the Houthis seized the capital in an armed strike. Another civil war eclipsed by the ISIL in Iraq.

Gen. David H. Petraeus returned to Iraq to attend the annual Sulaimani Forum, a get-together of Iraqi leaders, thinkers and academics, in northern Iraq’s Kurdistan region.

He answers questions from the reporter and expounds on some of his views on the situation. In particular he says that ultimately the "threat to Iraq’s long-term stability and the broader regional equilibrium is not the Islamic State; rather, it is Shiite militias, many backed by — and some guided by — Iran."

That they played an important role in stopping ISIS' advance he says is without question, but their actions towards not just extremists, but Sunni civilians in Iraq have isolated the Sunni population and risks perpetually driving them away from any hope of a united Iraq. He also says the more Iran's presence in the region is felt, the more Sunni extremists are going to go haywire.

Iranian General Qasem Soleimani is brought up and Petraques refers to him as a worthy opponent during the war but his actions in the present just highlight all the above stated concerns.

He places a lot of blame on the rise of ISIS on Maliki, saying he doesn't believe Iraq is doomed to be ungovernable because of sectarian differences, but that the government's corruption and authoritarianism drove many disillusioned people into the extremists' arms. He also faults the United States for being too ready to put Iraq behind them and putting whatever happened there on the backburner in order to deal with other matters, letting the whole thing fester until it exploded, that the pull out gave the wrong impression to regional players that the US was bailing out entirely.

On dealing with ISIS and Iraq's long term stability he states several points:

  1. Iraqi forces should not overextend themselves. Plan ahead concerning who and how recaptured territory will be protected and held. Specifically, anti-ISIS Sunni forces should brought up to hold primarily Sunni areas, to show the people that this is a liberation, not a conquest.

  2. Stop the horrible conduct of the militias and security forces against the Sunni populations in recaptured areas. Reprisals and revenge and just plain prejudice and selfish criminal behavior will only isolate the Sunnis even more and plant the seeds for ISIS 2.0. Iraq needs to bring it's Sunni population back into the national fold if it ever wants lasting peace.

  3. Plans need to be made for dealing with the Iran-backed Shiite militias once their common cause is over.

  4. The stability situation in Iraq and Syria are connected and more needs to be done in Syria to support anti-ISIS' forces. He doesn't mention anything about Assad.

Edit. I didn't know the forum had a number list thing. Good to know.

Daesh go niche on social media. The report is getting on a bit now, but I think it's good news: Daesh are being driven off the big social media sites and have to resort to contaminating the smaller and more niche sites with their torture porn. The more underground they are, the harder it'll be to recruit new members, frighten and intimidate others, fundraise etc.

[up]Fair point, but a lot of mainstream media do tend to focus on social media to write a lot of news articles to fill the daily quota, so to speak.

If Da'esh gets to post less, the mainstream media will ultimately stop caring and move on to the next shocking thing. In short, if you remove or damage the main link of communication between Da'esh and the mainstream media, one or the other will have to fade away in importance. I like to think Da'esh will fade away in importance and size.

ISIS:

Fears British medics crossed into Syria

At least nine British medical students and doctors are feared to have travelled to Syria to work in areas controlled by Islamic State (IS). The group - all in their late teens or early twenties - had been studying in Sudan.

Some of their relatives, who have travelled to the Turkish Syrian border, told the BBC they are gravely concerned about their welfare. They are believed to have travelled to Syria more than a week ago.

BBC Turkey correspondent Mark Lowen said some in the group had sent messages to their parents to say they were doing voluntary work to help Syrians. One of the fathers, who lives in Britain, said he hoped his daughter and her colleagues were in Turkey as their mobile phone signals had been picked up on the Turkish side of the border. But a local MP following the case said they would have been found had they still been in Turkey, especially if they were trying to work in any medical facility.

Pentagon investigates 'IS online threat' to US military

The US defence department says it is investigating an online threat allegedly made by Islamic State (IS) to about 100 of its military personnel. A list of names and addresses was posted on a website linked to the group alongside a call for them to be killed. The group said it obtained the information by hacking servers and databases but US officials said most of the data was in the public domain.

A US security source told the BBC that those on the list were being contacted. The group, which called itself the Islamic State Hacking Division, said the personnel named had participated in US missions against IS. It urged its supporters in the US to "take the final step" and "deal with" those named.

A US defence official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told US media: "I can't confirm the validity of the information, but we are looking into it."

[up]The medical students who vanished, possibly into Daesh territory - so it's not clear yet if they were kidnapped, went there voluntarily but only help heal people, or went into those areas as Jihadists sold on 'the dream'. Or some combination of the three. So I'll have to withhold judgement. It's possible we'll never know.

...A list of names and addresses was posted on a website linked to the group...
Whenever I read about information coming from Twitter accounts or websites linked to the group I sincerely hope that they are then promptly reported and closed. Daesh propaganda and exhortations to violence (or, well, anything) should not be tolerated online.

Georgia Man Admits He Planted Pipe Bombs in Local Park to Scare His Neighbors Into Caring About Terrorists: http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2015/03/25/3638841/georgia-patriot-says-planted-pipe-bombs-park-sow-fear-foreign-terrorists/

A Georgia man is facing federal charges after confessing to planting pipe bombs in a local park to frighten locals into caring more about the threat of “foreign” terrorist groups.

As Raw Story reports, 67-year-old Michael Sibley of Marietta, Georgia is under investigation by the FBI for allegedly leaving a “potentially explosive device” in a backpack along a hiking trail last November. The backpack, which was discovered by a mother and her daughter, contained two “partially-constructed” pipe bombs, a listing of Atlanta Falcons football games, a schedule for the Atlanta-area subway system, and documents that named the Marcus Jewish Community Center nearby.

Police also found a Qur’an and a copy of the book The Rape of Kuwait in the backpack, but Sibley confessed to investigators earlier this month that his actions weren’t inspired by religious extremism. Instead, Sibley, who told investigators that he “viewed himself as a patriot,” suggested that he planted the bombs and the items in an attempt to convince his neighbors that they could be targets of global terrorism.

“[Silbley] felt no one was paying attention to what was going on (sic) the world,” the official federal complaint read. “Sibley felt if he placed a package in a Roswell Park then people would finally get that this type of activity could happen anywhere.”

The complaint also noted that Sibley inscribed the backpack with the name “Mina Khodari” because it “looked foreign.”

tl;dr: Racist man plants bombs in the hopes other people would become racist
