Gotham is New York, except when Metropolis is New York, in which case Gotham is Chicago.

Yes, there is a DCU New York. That's where the headquarters of the DEO (Department of Extranormal Operations) are. Wonder Woman also operated in NY for a while.

New York exists(but usually doesn't have the extreme focus that Marvel puts on it).

Here's a old map of the region. And here's another. They're both pretty outdated and their numbers are really old.

Yes, there is a DCU New York.
The funny part is is that instead of the Big Apple, the DCU New York is called the "Cinderella City" because it has two "stepsisters" (Gotham and Metropolis).

Yikes, I wasn't aware Gotham was that much more populated than Metropolis.

Edit: Seriously, even Bludhaven, Ivy City and Coast City had more inhabitants than Metropolis, and the latter was completely decimated only a few years ago by the time that map was made.

I wish they would do updated maps of the comic world. The map of the multiverse is good but we don't have maps of DCU!Earth from after 2006 IIRC.

Midway City is basically the DCU's equivalent of Chicago even though Chicago exists in the DC Universe .

Which is weird, because Midway City is a real place.

The whole book was pretty great. Even had a JL team(Justice Incarnate) created at the end of the story by the different worlds heroes(their leader is the President Superman).

These are just the worlds the people in-universe know about. There are apparently a bunch they haven't seen yet.

[up]I think one of the seven unknown worlds could be the DCEU and the different TV worlds.

Since someone asked about New York in the DCU:

DC tends to use New York in their stories as almost a crutch. Its the place they send heroes when they're looking for an easy way to change the status quo, but its usually boring and doesn't stick. Nightwing is a notable example of this, his series was never as good after he left Bludhaven.

Grant Morrison's Manhattan Gaurdian miniseries from Seven Soldiers is probably makes the best use of New York as a setting of any DC comics.

I rememeber way back in the 80's, one of Neil Gaiman's earliest projects for DC was a Secret Origins issue about some of Batman's rogues gallery. He wrote the framing pieces, which was of a tabloid tv crew doing a show on the criminals of Gotham, and I think the origin of the Riddler (he did the origin of Poison Ivy in a separate issue). At one point he has them interviewing an old guy who had lived in Gotham his whole life; he said he'd never seen a super criminal himself, nor Batman, and he doubted if they were even real.

[up][up]I forgot about that. Its maybe the only time DC has tried to move a character to New York to shake up their status quo where it worked really well. (Though its mostly because they used it to give her a supporting cast instead of having her leave one behind).

Also helps that she didn't break up with her girlfriend like usually happens when heroes moves(and both have shown up in each other's books).

By any stretch of the imagination, 72,000 people would not be considered a Metropolis. Maybe back in the year 1800, but you have to hit at least 500,000 to produce a city anywhere near crowded enough to need vigilante justice.

Now I remember Catwoman moved away to New York during No Man's Land, and there she had an extended adventure with the Trickster.

And, yanno, I'd figure the city Lex Luthor has as his base of operations, the so-called City of Tomorrow, the one that needs one of the most powerful Earth heroes to defend, would be much more populated than that.

According to these Turkish Airlines tie-ins, Metropolis has a population of 3 million and Gotham has a population of 2.5 million.

When Kyle Higgins was writing the last Nightwing book, he had Nightwing leave Gotham and move to Chicago. It didn't last all that long (Forever Evil caused a big change in Dick Grayson's status quo), but he was there.

Marv Wolfman had Dick Grayson move to Manhatten, back when he was writing the New Teen Titans in the early 80's. Prior to that, Dick moved from Gotham to New Carthage (state unknown—it kinda felt New Jersey-ish) to go to college at Hudson University. Apparently the fact that they really wanted to get Batman and Robin away from each other meant Dick couldn't go to Gotham U...
