You know we really should have had a DC Universe Animated Original Movie General Thread but oh well.

I'm going to be pissed if they decided to cut Aquaman, since he had one of the best parts in that story. And also because he's my favorite.

[up] Aquaman is confirmed by the plot synopsis. They just don't have an actor listed yet.

I thought they were planning all their future movies to be original stories?

If this is the case, give me The Killing Joke with Mark Hamill already damn it!

I am not even slightly surprised by this choice as the next JL movie (considering just how much DC pushed this storyline as their jumping-on point for new readers).

My only surprise is that they did it before Batman and Son (which is my guess for the next Batman movie).

I still really don't get why they want Cyborg to be in everything.

You look happy, I can change that if you want.

[up]Because he's pretty much DC's only major black superhero. At least the only one whose rights aren't iffy, like Static. And since Marvel's giving a big push to The Falcon, DC's probably trying to play catch-up.

[up] What about Steel? Too Superman?

Or is he not 'major' character enough? Because I never would have thought of Cyborg a 'major' character any time prior to Flashpoint. Even now I'm not sure I think of him as much of a 'major' character since it seems to be less about him becoming real popular all of the sudden and more 'let's try to make Cyborg popular' or something.

[up]I definitely think Steel is cool. I'd say more likely, Cyborg is DC's most recognizable hero...without any rights issues or a legacy aspect. John Stewart is recognizable thanks to the cartoon, but DC obviously wants to continue pushing Hal Jordan as the "one true" Green Lantern. Static is also probably recognizable thanks to his cartoon but DC doesn't own him. And then Steel, cool as he is, kind of requires set-up beforehand in a Superman movie.

So of the black heroes DC has available to use in adaptations and stuff, Cyborg is probably just the one who offers the least number of problems.

Cyborg also comes with a unique set of powers that makes him stand out more from the other heroes, as well he has had some decent exposure between Teen Titans and Smallville. Steel, as we know him best now, used Powered Armor to imitate Superman's Flying Brick abilities (and in general is an Iron Man knock-off).

@comicwriter That synopsis is of the Origin comic story, not of the actual animated film, which is why I'm anxious to see if Aquaman is actually in this. Really, I think the upcoming Flashpoint film is the only time he's played a major role in one of this DTV films. All he got were a couple of cameos in the other ones. It just seems kind of suspicious to me that all the league members except Arthur have been cast, but I guess we'll see.

Aquaman already got cut when they did Justice League Doom. He can't really be cut out of a Flashpoint adaptation because he plays such a big role in that story that ties into Wonder Woman's (I haven't read Flashpoint btw, just going off what I researched). If he at least gets some kind of cool, badass cameo by the end I'll be kind of happy. I just want to see some mad sharks and a trident through Darkseid's eye.

How surprising that the top guys at DC just happen to pick *another* story that they made themselves to adapt to an animated film. Because, you know, Justice League: Origin and Flashpoint were just so historically important and there are no other more popular, significant or just better written stories left to adapt.

In 30 years we're still going to be talking about that iconic moment in JLA:Origin...you know...where um...Batman said something? Oh! They all had high collars on their costumes! Classic and unforgettable.

Nothing but pure, self-serving ego and abuse of power. How many DC direct animated movies from now on will be vanity projects based on work by Geoff Johns and Jim Lee and their pals? Be ready when they announce Liefeld's Hawk and Dove animated feature, because that is obviously a thing that needs to be.

[up] ...vanity project? Um, no. A series of Green Lantern movies would be vanity projects. JL: Origin is no labor of love - it's a cynical piece of marketing with no creative soul behind it. Every element of it is geared toward maximum adaptation potential and a concerted attempt to appeal to the mainstream.

I doubt it has much to do with Johns wanting to push his work and more to do with them attempting to push the new Justice League into the mainstream. They've already launched a huge toy line and merchandise at Target and it's pretty consistently rumored that the live-action movie (if and when it's made) is going to be similar.

Timm said that story wasn't suited for animation. Now, it's true he stepped down, but not long ago enough for someone else to have worked on KH yet.

The current head of the DTV division actually said they were going to move away from adaptations period. Which is why news of them already doing a New 52 adaptation surprises.

And it looks like he's replacing Aquaman :/ They didn't even mention Aquaman at all.

Unless he makes a super secret surprise cameo, I am very disappointed.

I think the writers have a hard time using Aquaman in these movies because it'd require using an aquatic set piece to properly showcase his abilities. Otherwise he might as well just be another Flying Brick.

I still maintain the smartest thing the YJ writers did was give Aqualad water swords and his electric eel tattoos. It let him use his strength and combat skills on land while still visually tying him to the ocean and his name.

He has access to poseidons trident. And he cant fly. That seems like it would be perfectly easy to differentiate him from a flying brick.

I don't think Aquaman's fighting style would be much different from Wonder Woman's. They're both super strong weapon users. Besides, the comic already had a way for Aquaman to show off his powers in a very awesome way that's become a meme, not to mention Shazam actually IS another flying brick plus magic lightning.

They could sort of do what was done with him in Injustice and have the trident give him limited control over water and lighting, but not to the extent of being a water bender like Mera or shooting out lightning like Shazam and Black Adam.
